Title: Anonymous photo's
Post by: Glyn on October 11, 2005, 16:08:01
Who would agree to no names with photo entry, until end of voting?
Could be quite exciting? ;D

Not a bad idea that Glyn. I sometimes think that who posts the photos affects the voting for that photo. We all have our favorites who we will (nearly) always vote for i am sure. I for one though am not influenced by such matters. I go for the photo I like nothing more.

Only one problem there Glyn - the avatar gives it away.......or am I missing something :-\

Theres a thought. Just how do we post anonymously?  Everyone knows our 'screen' names etc.

I suppose The answer could be  to send them direct to Dan then he posts them up (like he does for the voting). That might be asking too much of him though.

Could we not just PM them to Dan ?

Think it's a good idea, if it can be worked. I'm like Garden Cadet, try and vote for the best pic, but I'm never sure whether I'm influenced by who's taken it though. :-\ Lottie

Maybe a poll is the best way to go on this one. and then the results could be Dan's decision? ;)

I think it is a good idea too.  as long as you can still be able to limit it to one piccy each.

There's not enough wooden spoons to go around so I'll borrow someone elses.

Is the suggestion that the winners of the comp are winning solely on the basis of how many mateys are voting for them and not the actual picture itself?  Hmmmm  >:(  I only vote for the PIC I like best, not the person behind it.

Not bothered either way. I join in because it's fun and I get to see great pictures. I don't give a tinker's cuss who took 'em!

phew, glad it isn't only me wondering what all the hubub is about.  I look at the pics when they are first posted, then when Dan puts together the list, I don't even look at the names, merely the photos.  Gotta say, this time I am rather in love with Loobys sunflower and I want it for my wall!!!
Title: Re: Anonymous photo's
Post by: Marianne on October 13, 2005, 19:02:22
I don't look at names neither - I vote for the picture I prefer.

I could not vote for a picture I do not like completely just because a certain name is underneath it.

So surely if you only vote on a picture not the person, it wouldn't matter if you new who took the photo. Makes no difference to me either way I always vote for my favourite image on first impression anyway. If it stands out from the rest its the best ;D
I understand Glyn's point of view, it could make the comp even more intriguing as to the mystery photographer, delaying the name until the unveiling.

Curious subject, yes it should be fun and it still is but I wonder if some subconcious thing happans to influence our vote, I wont list all the emotives but you never know, I really tried to vote for a good photo but then who am I to judge? I thought capturing the butterfly and dragonfly was quite a good "shutter speed" and the river of flowers caught my eye but then an easy photo if you didnt grow them yourself?
and the wooden board walk and funny skies etc. All good photos really.

I wonder if we could have a vote then another winner picked by an expert photographer???

I could ask one if he would judge each month along side the votes?

might help us to improve our skills even?
Title: Re: Anonymous photo's

and the sky pic and the ballons and the kids in the water......
all have different meanings for us as individuals.
Apart from that........... :-X

The best photo from a photographers points of view may be different? :o

but this to me seems a bit like the whole advertising th8ng. we all say we arnt really influenced by advertising but would the huge companies like coca cola really sped so much moeny on advertising if it didnt affect us.

i think although most of the time i twill be the pic, now and again if theres a tie between two pics we go for the one person we are most friendly with.
Title: Re: Anonymous photo's
Post by: Dirkdigger on October 15, 2005, 09:05:52
Hi Andy H , but even if you did get an expert photographer to view the photos the results would still only be  his opinion. I don't agree with only one person having the say over the photos, I like the system where we all vote (if we want to) on what we like. Not experts, just ordinary people having a bit of fun displaying our photos for everyone to enjoy.
As far as improve our skills, I think the comments from our friends is enough to lift our heads and want us to try and do something better for the next monthly instalment.
As other people have commented it was just a bit of fun to show everyone you photos, not to be the next Ansel Adams.
Sorry about my rant.

~well that defeats the anonymous voting because as soon as our names appear at voting time we are back to square one again.
like most folk i vote for the one that really grabs me & not because i think i know the person who has taken the pic
it's just abit of fun guys ;D
Title: Re: Anonymous photo's

the person who sent the picture wotn appear til after the voting. so for voting i imagine the pictures will be like pic number 1, 2, 3 etc.

i do think that this could get very blown out of the window with photgraphers voting and everything. and as for the voting as i said i think we all try to go for the bext but sometimes do we get mislead to one photounintentially and subconciously.

Wish I had never added my 2p worth now :-\

It was only a suggestion and happen to know an expert photographer who see them in a different way to others, ie:the qualities that make a good photo in their eyes compared to ours.

It was also in ADDITION to our opinions too. Could be interesting.
(obviously not) :-X

maybe I can dig up some of his to see what you lot think?

I personally go for the photos that catch the eye and I like AND which are hard to capture pics, some are lucky timing and some are a good eye behind the lens of natural life. Some are emotive to us as individuals......

zzzzzzzzzzzzzz enough said, as long as we all still enjoy others photos which I do, some great ones there.

ps:the swan was nice ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I mean mutant hobbit zero votes!

Great sky and angle

Tough choice who to vote for I thought.

My point being, I was just curious who a GOOD photographer would have voted for?

Some of the good photographers are you lot, no offense meant.

PS: he doesnt take veg photos! sorry!
Mainly underwater ones, macro wide angle etc.

Hey Andy, think any suggestions are good ones, I'd like to know what a professional thinks, purely out of curiosity and plain nosiness...I'm like that!! Express opinions freely, always like to hear new ideas!! I just think it sounds like a bit of fun, adds spice! Lottie  ;D ;D ;D ;)

I wouldn't be interested in knowing what a professional thinks. I think professionals and so called experts are blinded by their own science.  I would stop entering if such people became involved.

I don't think Andy means the Professional to judge, we do that don't we?? But I'd interested to know how to get a better pic, not just for here, but for every day pic taking.  You haven't seen my family pics!!Have lovely one of cat's tail.. ::) ::) ;D

yeah we still judge, I was just curious of his opinion afterwards.
I took some while diving and to be honest, in the scheme of this my £135 camera is rubbish compared to others but he did like my dolphin photo. Not great quality but good shot(shhh it was lucky) but then thats what a lots of good shots are. Will try to find it.

If I wanted to find out how to improve my photography I'd take a course, read a photographic magazine, look it up on the net, read the camera instructions etc.

An expert viewing our  competiton would surely have to find something nice to say about everyones' picture so as not to upset anyone and spoil their enjoyment of a "fun" thing to do.

I'd take a course,read a photographic magazine,look it up on the net,
ask an expert?

This site is all about opinions so that of someone elses is just another one without people getting up on high horses, it is all but fun and curiosity.

I will keep answer to myself and those that PM`ed out of curiosity.

I will keep it in the adults only folder! :-X

Didn`t want to upset anyone on here but I mean how pathetic!!!
All I said was "I wonder what a pro would think"!

For that I get 3rd degree hung draw and quartered, keelhauled etc

Not that I give a dam really, just its stupid, thats all. enough said.

posts ceased.............
Title: Re: Anonymous photo's
Post by: Andy H on October 25, 2005, 20:26:31
......posts unceased! ;D

Glyn says, more fun thats all.................

DD More interesting (but own choice at end of day)

adam tie between 2 then influenced........

DD Only HIS opinion, yes it IS, as is OURS as INDIVIDUALS.
We would still be the voters for the photo......

Heldi "not interested what a pro thinks" For one it is not his job but a hobby ut rather good at it, but he couldnt MAKE me LIKE a photo that I didnt. He could however give an opinion which we are all free to do.

Heldi "I wont play anymore" then don`t.

Lottie  Not pro to judge, it is still us.

Maybe I will get him to ANONYMOUSLY enter a picture!!!!hehehe

would probably lose! Now watch you lot subconciously knowing it could be in the next month!!!!!
Or it could be a poor first time entrant with great photo getting zero votes cos you think he is the IMPOSTER!!!!!!

Personally I will still vote for MY favorite photo as I am sure we all do anyway. The grapes were a great photo but sadly this time, not MY favorite. Sorry EJ!!!! ;)

Sorry Heldi but I think that you, like have just done, went over the top a bit ;D

Title: Re: Anonymous photo's

I haven't taken people's views out of context. Reading back it seems to me they were referring to the anonymous entries not about the expert viewing the photos.

Actually read what  DD said  and I think he is spot on.

The competition is meant to be fun not a critique of peoples work.

The reason I take part and have done so every month whether I've got a good pic or a decidedly scrappy pic is to show good will and support for the competition.  The folks on this site voted me winner twice. That's more than enough opinion for me and very proud of it I am too.

If the competition changed with regards to introducing a professional/expert with their views about the pictures then the very essence of the competition will have changed.  It's innocence and its fun.  Therefore I'm quite at liberty to say I wouldn't be interested in it anymore, without being labelled childish.

Assuming that at some point I may actually post a picture here, then I have to agree with Heldi on this. I see this board as fun photos, and the technical quality is secondary to the novel content of the picture.

Of course, a professional would understand this, but it then takes it into a different realm, and would certainly remove the enjoyment for me, because all the pictures I take are rubbish anyway. Come to that, my allotment is rubbish too, but the old timers are amazed how I can lift dozens of monster size carrots and onions ... all grown naturally, without any chemicals.

So having contributed my happorth, and not voted ...

Bye ! ! !

Agreed! I repeat, all I said was,"I wonder........"

natural curiosity thats all
an opinion thats all
all out of context thats all

just a comment on a post thats all

great site thats all
great photo`s thats all it is

I like the idea of the competition being merely for fun and only viewed/voted upon by fellow members.

I also like the idea of somebody on the private telling me how I might make my piccies turn out better.  I don't want to be a pro, but I do want better pictures.

Ergo I like BOTH ideas.

Andy, I'm up for your mateys opinion (I assume by PM so as not to upset the natives) although I only enter a piccie about twice a year, hehe.  Having said that, if I am entering a piccie and it's mine all mine, I don't mind your mates opinion coming onto the board either :)

I agree, I don`t want him telling me my favorite is rubbish but he MAY have a valid point that makes me go Hmmmmm?

My digital camera is ok but you can`t play around with it like the old clunky ones.

My thought was that we judge as usual and he just told me which he thought was best and we would all whizz back to the piccy and wonder why! Or maybe it was the one we picked amongst ourselves too!

We I won`t go on about it but I did email him the pics and will see him tonight at scuba club so will pm the results to those who wanted it and pm`ed me.

I may even put it on here as many have showed interest but this will be a ONE OFF because I can`t be bothered with all the fuss it has caused. :'(

Anyway, if my mate thinks the swan is rubbish then I won`t tell you all, if he thinks it is the best then I won`t tell you cos you will all shout FIX! :o  CON BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Next months competition will be anonymous (well as anonymous as it can be).

Look out for the entry details.
