One year a plot holder left overgrown courgettes unpicked, They looked rather like mortar bombs, I suppose, particularly as the colour faded.

Better safe than sorry.  As an ex-squaddie, I know that unexploded ordinance is nasty at best.

I've dug up shrapnel; a genuine unexploded isn't impossible.

It makes me think back to during the war when my grandfather gave my mother very large marrows to make marrow jam. I was carrying one these home on the bus when a person asked me if I had  one of Hitlers bombs . Mum used to make marrow and ginger jam out of the great big yellow ripe marrows.

It's the first time I've tried it from the post and it works for me - even when I log in as Guest  - but if all else fails, highlight the whole thing (from well before to well after) cut & paste into the URL line. If that doesn't work try pasting into Notepad (which removes all formatting) then cut & paste from there.

Or just google "Cyclanthera explodens youtube" - there are a few videos - the one with tweezers in frame and spines like a wonky horse chestnut is the best, any that show a hairy oval fruit are a different species (squirt cucumbers).

I can understand why squirt cucumbers are green - they work on liquid pressure, but the Cyclanthera is green outside and dry inside - I was expecting it to be brown (like exploding bean pods).

Cheers.
