Title: What's in the name?
Post by: ina on November 07, 2003, 18:42:50
Why did you use the name you did on this forum?

I remember a while back, Legless told the story behind her name. Now I think it would be nice if the ones that want to explain their choice.

Mine speaks for itself. I had wanted to use 'Dutchess' but I was told it was used already (it wasn't). When we lived in Alaska we had a two way radio in the car (don't want to be stuck at minus 40 C and not be able to call anyone, this was before the mobile telephones) so I was given the 'handle' Dutchess by friends.

That's my story, who follows?

Mine is not very clever really, I thought it better than sweet william cos I am a girlie! Plus of course I happen to love Doris Pinks, and my mentor gardener, who was my favorite Aunt, and gave me my love of the soil and everything nature, was called Doris. (Sad to say she died a few years ago, so now I use you lot to get my gardening questions answered!)
Do you all have mental pictures of what we all look like?? Or is it just me? ;D  Dottie P

Ava Banana is not a real name is it? Where does that come from?

C'mon Eric, translate please.

Beer Belly? cdchater? djstig? Tenuse? Vixter? Ciderself? Rewsal? Foggy? Piglet? Rdak? Palefire? Hot potato? Cool carrot? Tenuse? etc. etc. What made you and others choose your names?

Hi Eric, I didn't really have to 'look' it up in a book. I've got this neat little gadget in the pc, if I double click any word, the translation and usage drops out of this tiny window in the corner of the screen. If I click a Dutch word, the English drops out and v.v. Sad thing is that it's very limited, couldn't afford the good dictionary. Cognomen drops out as family name or nickname.

Loved your story Doris Pinks, I didn't know it is a flower.

Cerig is very boring - it was my log-in moons ago at Birmingham Cable - Ceri Greves is my full maiden name that I use for work
Title: Re: What's in the name?
Post by: Palefire on November 08, 2003, 12:39:39
If you "Google" Palefire, you'll get completely the wrong impression of me! ;) I had never heard of the book when I took the moniker, although I have since looked in to it and I may eventually read it. As far as I knew, "Palefire" was a character in a fantasy; this was read by a gothic band member and woven into the lyrics or name of one of their songs. Now, I could be completely wrong about this because I was rather inebriated at the time of the conversation that revealed this! :o I am a gothic-ish person and the name stuck in my memory. One of my old uni friends also ran a company called Palefire Productions at one time, which promoted up and coming Goth bands. :)

The real reason I am Palefire is because I thought it was a cool 8), mysterious sounding name and, being a Piscean, I tend to daydream a lot! ::)

I do like Palustris, though. Sounds a lot cooler than its definition Eric!! ;D

Love, Palefire

Campanula is a tad dull but apart from my fave flowers, it sort of chimes with one of my better school reports:
' empty vessels make the most noise'.
Title: Re: What's in the name?
Post by: Colin_Bellamy-Wood on November 10, 2003, 01:08:31
Bellamy-Wood is obviously my real name, it never occurred to me to use a non-de-plume when I signed on, and I don't have the imagination to think of one.

People have said to me that I have a "posh" name.   It's not really, but it is somewhat  romantic.   I goes back several generations, and it would seem that the Squire refused to allow his daughter to marry an Irish tinker, so they eloped.   They never got married, and it was common in those days, to put both their surnames together when they registered their children's birth.

I have found reading everybody elses' stories fascinating.

Sorry Ina.  We`re only allowed 5500 characters per posting on these boards, and it would take far more than that for me to do justice to the story of Llewellyn ap Llewllyn.
Title: Re: What's in the name?
Post by: Beer_Belly on November 10, 2003, 09:42:37
Mine is simply Beer_Belly because I have one  :D I've used that on BBSs and on the net from the days before it had pictures

On Dutch boards I sometimes use Bier_Buik

oh and I also use ToadRunner but that's a completely different story.

As a new allotmenteer  I was beside myself when I stumbled across this website. Although I much prefer a drop of the black stuff to cider.
Like budgie breeder I have my perceptions of other contributors ??
I see Tim regularly on the Glenfiddich advert. Very handsome.
A mix of English breakfast and Earl Grey is good Hugh.

Fascinating stories everyone, and well done doubledutch for starting this thread (I have often wondered if Budgiebreeder does breed budgies and if beer belly does have a beer belly - and now I know!)

'cd' are my initials (Claire Dixon...although I'm now Claire Barrett) and the river 'chater' is the river flows at the bottom of my garden. I tend to use chater for most things (inc my tax return service - chatertax - good plug)

Doubledutch, how did legless get her name? Haven't seen many posts from her lately?
Title: Re: What's in the name?
Post by: jethro on November 10, 2003, 16:05:31
Hi all, if you don't already know my moniker comes from Jethro Tull ( the group ) ;D  there again i could have used Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, Cream, Jimi Hendrix etc, (showing my age now ;) . but thought jethro was more amiable?

cd chater, legless is a word we use up here which means totally drunk, can't walk, talkand insensible , but i'm sure that's not what in this case ;D

My name is Sylvia but younger sister couldn't say it when she was learning to talk and called me sizzy, and that is how I have always been introduced to people.
How many of you out there remember Dennis Lotus, Ronnie Carroll, Alma Cogan, Michael Holiday, Emile Ford, etc?

thanks for having the faith in me jethro!!

i haven't been around much as i've been having a hectic time at work!!

my name comes from when i first started using the internet, i used to go to a formula one forum and chat there. we all went to the british grand prix and met up which was great. i wore those trousers that zip off at the knee and they weren't very common then so because the legs of my trousers came off they named me legless and i use it on all the forums i go to now!

Ava Banana as in the "London" type song.....

......shortened from "Oi, ave a banana" which I seemed to remeber was in a song from old......

....I used to do a lot of computer gaming.......and had to think of something original to play as against all those online american people......

.....this seemed a quite descriptive both from an amusing and a geographical point of view..... ::)

Thanks for your nice remark cdchater. I am so thrilled that so many people came forward, what a wonderful bunch of people here.

Hey Beer Belly, you don't look half as scary as you do on that blue picture under your name here. How do I know? Hahaha, I had a peek on your web site and there was a wonderful picture of this hunk of a guy, nice looking really, on a vulcano top. As for the beer belly, I don't think you qualify yet, need to drink a lot more beer I'm afraid. (I figured you wouldn't mind anybody looking on your site or you would not have written the address when you registred here, right?)

Hugh, is Llewellyn ap Llewellyn anything like Kramer vs Kramer?
Title: Re: What's in the name?
Post by: Hugh_Jones on November 10, 2003, 23:21:07
Is Kramer a dutch name? If so Kramer vs Kramer would be double dutch. Who were they anyway?

I told you your dd Dictionary didn`t speak welsh!

I wonder what the politically correct Board censor would make of a nice long welsh swear word?

Wow - thanks Ina - I've never been referred to as a hunk before - my wife refers to me as a fat bloke or chubby hubby. And yes you're right I don't mind you looking at my site, that's what it's there for :-)

Post by: Hugh_Jones on November 11, 2003, 21:51:11
Oh there are, Eric. There are indeed.  If you`ve ever been to Anglesey you will know that when an English visitor enters the village shop, the conversation in english suddenly stops, and the assembled customers (there are always a lot in village shops in Anglesey) suddenly start discussing him or her in Welsh. This happened to my wife and me many years ago and I let out several choice welsh expletives.  The resulting silence was very gratifying.

Got mine from Richard Hawley from the Longpigs (fab Sheff band who split a few years ago) - was reading his palm and told him he'd do well to go solo and probably would in the future.  He was a bit put out at this and said "what are you, some sort of f**ckin Mysticmog or something"   He did go solo, playing with Pulp and various other bands, and the name stuck.....

Will get Tenuse to explain her name, v amusing...

Me - I stick to Gavin; very boring - but I am eternally VERY grateful for the fateful coin coming down "tails".

My parents were looking at a huge stone tablet in St Machar's Cathedral in Aberdeen, with the names of all the pre-reformation bishops.  They liked two names, and tossed a coin - tails got me Gavin; "heads" would have been Aeneas!!!!!!!!!!

All best - Gavin

First time I've noticed this thread.....don't really know why I chose mine.....wanted some sort of connection to gardening....so potato seemed an obvious choice....I also want to grow these in the Spring....and I always seem to feel warm so that's probably where the hot bit came from.....I just thought it was a cool  8) name!...you know....a bit too hot to handle!!..hhmmm.....most inappropriate really for a little old grannie who now gets her pension!!....I'm obviously still a bit of a rebel!  ::)

Really enjoyed reading your reasons though.....H.P. (a bit saucy too)
