Title: Sad sight
Post by: Palustris on January 26, 2017, 14:18:54
Saw this in the field next to us this morning. Presume it was hit by a car and managed to crawl into the field before dying. Crows have begun recycling it already.
Odd colour for a badger.

There is a type of badger called Erythristic.  They do not have black pigment but are not truly albino which are white.

So sad that we normally only see dead Badgers.
We get to see them occasionally where I live despite it being the town centre!

There are 5 setts of which we know, within a mile of us. In 21 years we have only ever seen three dead ones and three live ones. We never saw the ones which ate the thousands of tulip bulbs which we lost over last year. The local farmers do not want these setts culled as the badgers in them are free from TB and if they are killed then it is possible that new ones would move in brining the TB with them.
The genetic mutation which causes this colouration must be in the local population as the land owner here, tells me that this kind is fairly common

thanks for the reminder of our regular visitors that made our move to Dorset so brilliant, but im afraid the nightly visits have stopped some months back so we are assuming the worst...that said we did have a 2017 new year visitor a smaller one that we guessed was maybe from the same fam but it hasn't been here for a while........good fun while it lasted.
