Title: Vinegar
Post by: landimad on July 02, 2009, 23:38:59
If you are fair skinned as I am then the thought of getting sunburnt in this hot weather is one thing you worry about.
I as a child was rubbed over with malt vinegar to ease sun burn and prevent further burning when out in the bright sun.
Then my children came along, they got the same treatment as I did.
So long as there are no breaks in the skin or blisters, you can apply liberal amounts to the skin.
It is cheaper than sun creams and it maybe better in some cases. Don't quote me though.
All I know is that it worked for me and my kids, if you don't try then you don't know.
I get it that you end up smelling like a bag of chips for a while but I'd rather that than being burnt to a crisp.
I remember the time I went fishing all day and the car broke down on the way back. I got in about one in the morning and the missus was not impressed. But she had the last laugh when I asked her to put the vinegar on my back. It was like having ice cubes put on my back. Did the job though and I am thankful for that. 8) 8) 8)
Anyone else had a go with this method? :-\ :-\ :-\

landimad.....no! I've not used it, but you've brought back a Blast from the Past for me..

Must have been late 50s/v.early 60s? and a friend of my parents always used to buy bottles of olive oil/vinegar mix when they went to Spain.....bought it freshly mixed from the Chemist, too...

WOW! I've not remembered that for years 8)

I always wondered if there is not enough of the old ways around nowadays.
The young are taught these things but never heed them until something goes wrong.
If more people listened to what was taught them instead of trying to sue each other then this world maybe a better place.

We always use citrus and olive oil when we go away. Gives you a lovely tan. Tony cleans the rabbits cages with vinegar and I clean jewellery. We also use it to clean the windows. Remember my aunt puttin it on her to sunbathe. I would have thought that being acidic it would burn the skin in the sunlight.

Used to use olive oil and vinegar as a tanning lotion as a teeny 50/60 's ,

-- not sure with the intense sun rays we have now if it's a good idea ?

Had to buy the olive oil from a chemist in those days,  in a teeny bottle  --

wonder what the continentals would have made of that !!    All before air

travel was available to the masses.

Always give my car windscreen a wash in vinegar before an M O T ,

was fed up with being failed on faulty wipers  ---   was only grease that made them squeek !!

I would never use oils of any sort, due to having fair skin.
In today's climate there is no need for the oils. You are better off protecting than trying to tan. I would not recommend any form of tanning as the risk of skin cancer is to high.
If like me you work outside then it is best to cover or protect as best you can.

We have tall stalky weeds called Pokeweed easily taller than a man that have a long taproot impossible to dig out once they grow tall so I've tried cutting thru the stalk and applying a paste of salt and vinegar. They go into contortions eventually and slowly die unless they were huge and need a second application. I've tried this with mixed success on other pests growing too close to blueberries which I don't want to disturb.

I use vinegar in the washing machine, too. I live in a hard water area, but powdered water softeners have blocked my washing machine pipes in the past. Since I switched to adding a splash of white vinegar at the start of each wash, I haven't had to call out the repair-man for a gunged-up machine.

 :)

PS I find Tesco cheapest for white vinegar...

well I use it to wash some of my veg - particularly last year when the brassicas got well and truly attacked by white fly. I found the only way of cleaning them off was adding some vinegar to water to soak them in

i use white vinegar to soften dds nappies, cant use fabric softener on them as it stops them being so absorbent, i also use it in a spray bottle with either lavender or tea tree to get rid of cat pee smells, uc if u use normal cleaners they often have amonia and n the cat smells that n thinks it needs 2 reapply its own special pong, but the white vinegars meant 2 neatralise the smell?? bicarbs another kitchen wonder.... sounds like a vinegar fan club, lol!  :D

Yes, when I was about 10 years old  my Dad walked 4 miles to the nearest shop to get malt vinigar and margarine for my sunburn, it worked.  You are the first person that I have come across to agree.  Glad I did not imagine it.

Well the youngest had got sunburn when she attended a fete the other week and yes you gust it she had vinegar put on the burn to ease the pain and aid recovery. Lucky she had no burst blisters or I would not put it on.

i use white vinegar as fabric softener and i unblocked the shower with sodium bicarbonate followed by vinegar. my grandmother would put vinegar on insect bites and if anyone had a cough 'you need some cider vinegar' for that, maybe the cider would have done more good!

Oh yes, on a bite for sure. I have an itch stick that had ammonia in it originally, I can take the tiny cap off and refill it with vinegar. I have another one still with ammonia. I find sometimes that vinegar works better on some bites and ammonia on others.

I clean glass with it too.

Yes always put some in the water when cleaning windows and in the days when we used real wax polish on furniture Mother in law would periodically use vinegar on her furniture to remove old polish then start all over again!! When we kept pigs and the weather was very hot a very experienced "pig man" told us to wipe vinegar across the sows heads.

vinigar for wasp stings and bicarb for bee stings,
also if you fill up the windscreen bottle of the car put half a cup of vinigar in it. cleans the grease off the windscreens quicker and it does not freeze in the winter so I have been told.

I always use vinegar to clean the windows and mirrors and also use it to clean the rabbits litter tray. It gets the limescale off.

My mother always swore by vinegar to prevent nits.  She was a teacher and said she never once had them.   It did not work for my daughter though, as soon as anyone in the school had nits she had them as well.

Vinegar in the rinsing water is great for preventing fungus infections such as athlete foot and nappy rash, and prevents mould from forming on damp walls and around windows.

Yes it is brilliant for drains, also if you soak a sponge, put it in a plastic bag and then attach it to taps holding it on with lacky bands, works on shower heads too...I leave it on for about 30 mins. :)

Some bites and stings are acid based so ammonia works and some alkaline to vinegar works...supposedly neutralises the sting or it at least feels better. However don't get it wrong like my mother did to me causing a very bad reaction. Better to use an antihistan cream or tablet.

Vinegar is also great for taking the sting out of sunburn - you smell like a chip, but a couple of tablespoons in cool bath water takes a lot of the pain away.

I have had a problem with tenants letting their dogs use our garage floor as a toilet :o(

Apparently, vinegar will neutralise the smell. I am trying it and will report in on any successes  :blob7: failures  :tongue3:

Rub it on your taps or stainless steel sink, to descale and shine them.
Mix half a cup of vinegar with about a cup of water and boil it in your kettle: all the limescale will come off (same for a coffeemaker).
To stop funny smells in the drains, block all airways then put a tablespoon of bicarb down the drain, followed by a quarter of a cup of vinegar and quickly block up the plug. Leave to work for about 10 minutes then pour some boiling water down. Removes the greasy film off the inside of the drainage pipe.
It is disinfectant so you can also use it, slightly diluted, to wipe down work tops, door handles etc. Cheaper than chemicals.
If your towels are getting stiff, put a cup of vinegar in the rinsing water (put it in the fabric softener hole) - it removes the excess soap which tends to make them stiff. You can also put some in soaking water to remove any type of sweat/urine smell from fabric (e.g sports gear).
I always have a bottle in the cupboard!

I buy gallons of the stuff very cheaply from a Chinese supermarket (See Woo in Greenwich) and use it for lots of cleaning jobs. I also use it to make flavoured vinegar (raspberry, blackberry etc) for salads and gravies.

Well, a few weeks after treating the dog urine and poop smell on my concrete floor, I have a conclusion.....

The vinegar smell was quite unpleasant for a while, probably because I used so much :icon_shaking2:.

Now, there is a faint vinegar smeel but no yucky smell.  :hello2:

Therefore, I conclude that white vinegar is the saviour of my concrete floor. :wav:

I think I'll give it another wash down with Zoflora now, as I know the nasty smells have gone, so a floral one will be nice and Iknow it's not just masking a nasty smell  :blob7:

...and I have just noticed Jeannine's question about how many people make their own. I made some a few months ago from apple peelings and am just making some more. Not as strong tasting as commercial vinegar, but more or less free using own apples and water and a "mother-of-vinegar" I found at the bottom of my See Woo giant container when I finally emptied it.

Good to see another See-Woo shopper on here!  I have just run out of fish sauce and a few other staples so I might do a run at the weekend.  I always go in for a couple of things and end up with bags and bags of the stuff..

My kettle got covered in limescale  inside ,no matter how much washing I gave it ,the limescale never went away properly! I ended bying a £5 kettle from Asda and filled the old kettle up with vinegar for a week, the vinegar worked a treat but also my £5 kettle was faster boiling ,didn't wake the dead up when boiling! so much for the £80 kettle never again :BangHead:
