Title: Growing Rhubarb & Strawberry from seed
Post by: Dorthe on September 21, 2004, 17:11:38
Does anyone have any experience in starting rhubarb from seed?

I have seen organic seeds on sale from Suffolk herbs, and I like that sort, as you can pick rhubarb all season without worrying about the acid.

Also I love the strawberries, and wonder if it would be a nice experience growing them from seed - I currently think of them as "my babies", as they are the only thing in my allotment that went well this year..  :(

It was my first year - but I'm fighting back over lots of bindweed and will prevail next year!  :)

Done both from seed and they seem to be doing ok!!!
Had a few strawberries this year but will have to wait a bit for the rhubarb...

Hallo Dorthe, welcome on the board.

This year I used rhubarb seed and it worked very well. Very easy. :D
Before sowing I dug in a lot of manure. I had 15 plants.
I gave them lots of water, no extra feeding and they are strong and look very healthy. I will cover the plants within a few weeks with manure and next year I will have lots of new big rhubarb plants. ;D

hi Dorthe,
i've only grown alpine strawberries from seed, so can't comment on any others...mine came up with no problems and are in their 2nd year now, very healthy, lots of fruit and a long harvest period - on and on..... :)
ps. have some in the ground and some in containers, they seem happy with either sun or some shade.

Great news.

I will get hold of some seeds and start my own patch of strawberries and rhubarb :-)

Thanks for all the good advice on the site
