Title: The weather today part 3
Post by: ACE on February 25, 2022, 15:56:05
Nice and sunny but the brass monkey is badly in need of a welder. Somebody said it was snowing yesterday, must have been up the other end of the road, I never saw any.

Beautiful blue skies with warm sun, I’ve been in the garden for three hours pruning and tidying, only came in because my foot was hurting again and despite thermals, gloves, hat and gilet still rather chilly! 🥶

It stopped raining yesterday for enough time for me to mow and strim my overgrown paths. A bit later than usual because of the weather. I always say the grass starts growing when the temp reaches 10 degrees. Now back to the norm again, raining.

Brightened up later and we were able to get some stuff done, mainly re organising the greenhouses ready for the season... very wet in the avenues though!

We started with murky yellow skies on Tuesday had a layer of sand on cars, roofs, everything.   Same again yesterday.

Today skies are almost a normal pale grey and its dry but we could do with a good downpour or 3 to clear the sand in the atmosphere and rinse all the foliage.   Certainly not worth going to the carwash just yet.

It's been mostly sunny here bit with a biting wind giving a lot of wind chill factor and, finally, some snowflakes this evening.  Expecting snow overnight and a "feels kike -8C".

Having been busy with decorating and sewing since early Feb I've not sown much since the broad beans in late December so I bought some veggie plug plants today, all now fed, watered and tucked up in the polytunnel for safety.  Plant fair on Sunday - not held for the last 2 years - and I'm hoping to pick up some tomato treasures from Heritage Man to get a head start on my late sowings.

We have storm Diégo here, blowing a hoolie but not as badly as the 120kph forecast.  However there's lots of rain too and that may be enough to soften the earth and bring down a few more old trees.

We lost an old walnut in the big blows in Feb and I'm expecting its neighbour to keel over any time so haven't yet called in teh tree surgeon to deal with the first.

On the up side, the potatoes, shallots, white Paris onions and beetroot plugs I planted on Wednesday have certainly had a good soaking to settle them and the 2 remaining chooks are tucked up safe in the polytunnel with food and water and plenty to peck at as the earth has just been weeded, forked and composted ready for tomatoes.

Despite all the meds, extra hygiene and special feeds we lost another hen to the dreaded parasitic worms on Wednesday night so the whole hen house, pen and polytunnel have been dusted with diatomaceous earth and I'm working my round the rest of the veggie beds and paths - when it's not raining and blowing a gale!   They have to be confined at the mo cos of avian flu.

We have rain!  Yeah!  We already have a hosepipe ban here so it's great for all the newly planted ornamentals as well as the veggies.

On the other hand, we also have thunder and lightning so I can't get up the ladder to fix up a canopy on the now exposed barn beams (roof lost in a tornado) so I can move my nursery to a shaded spot out of full sun all day when we head off to see the gardens at Chaumont next week.

Just 15 minutes of heavy rain and 20 minutes of light rain/drizzle this morning  -  probably enough to replenish my water butts - but my recently planted out veggies will need watering again in a day or so unless we get some steady rain soon!

The forecast warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms seems to have passed to the west of Torbay.

Hissing down, but a bit too late for me unless the squash pump themselves up a bit, but I suppose the brassicas will rally through.   Tornado yesterday but it missed us. Started clearing the plot and tidying for the winter. Rubbish year, fingers crossed that this year is a one off.

frosty or what? no snow in this area but frosts like we haven't seen in years. Should get rid of all the bugs and pests that were going to winter down on my plot. The same for indoors as well the central heating has chose to give up this week. Nobody available until after the xmas break to fix it. Might move into the motor home in the garden for a while with its own heating system.

Any caravan sites open? you could go on a minibreak over Christmas. We went to Castleton a few years ago over Christmas and there was the compulsory male walking about in shorts on Christmas day.

How are you doing up in the frozen wastelands of the north. Don't look very pleasant to me. But at least a coating of poor mans fertiliser will do a bit of good. Spring has sprung here and don't need the heating on so much. 10 more days until I start putting the taters in. But travelling north in 20 days time. 4 hours drive and we will be back into the middle of winter.

Well no allotment for me today except to check the remaining chicken, and a nosey in the greenhouse.
Need to cover the chitting potatoes too from tonights frost. The blanket of snow on the greenhouse might help but not risking it.

It snowed with avengence up here in north wales for the last two nights. Snow clearing is a waste of time , I've nowhere to put the stuff. Then we get the quick thaw followed by plenty of mud. On the good side, temperature is above zero, so no frozen water pipes outside.

I’m doing my seed sowing over the next few days, first set of potatoes are nicely chitted and I’ve got another batch in colder conditions in the greenhouse just starting. I’m sowing very little direct this year as the weather just goes from one extreme to the other; it’s either too wet, cold or snowy to do much down the lottie.  So far today it’s rained enough that I still can’t cut grass or walk in soil, brilliant sunshine then looking like snow again…so everything is either going into modules like my garlic shallots and onions, or down under cover until the night temperatures improve…🙄🙄🙄

I'm  praying for reasonable weather tomorrow.

Each to their own but for me I really want nothing to do with the antediluvian shenanigans. I hope to head to the lottie and not return until it's all over.  It may be an unpopular opinion but given the new king's immense wealth the taxpayer picking up the tab for this shindig seems like taking the proverbial.

And don't get me started on that request to swear allegiance.

Where is all that warm weather that was promised?  Been rather cool and breezy here.  The ground is very dry too, seems like the wind has been having a very drying effect over the past couple of weeks.

Does anyone know if low atmospheric humidity dries the ground and to what extent.  We haven't had a prolonged dry period and the ground seems far dryer than would be normal after just a week or so without rain.

Although this week is my traditional planting out time I haven't planted out my plants yet because the ground is far too dry.It is snuff dry to around 3"(75mm) down and as my plants are growing in 3"(75mm) to plant  them could be fatal in my opinion so I am going to wait until we get some rain.

I feel that delaying my planting out is safer,plus it is easier to keep them watered as they are now than it would be if I planted them out now.

No rain forecasted for us here in Derbyshire for the next 20 days but night temps still around 8 degrees…..I have planted out two lots of bush tomatoes with protection and a prolonged hardening off period but will need to be watering every three days if so to keep everything going at this rate! 🙄

Cool and very dry in Lincolnshire too. I’ve planted out most things. The beans especially are not enjoying the lowish temperatures. And I’m feeling the need to water well any new plantings. We had some overnight rain a couple of nights ago but not enough to penetrate far. A good downpour would be most welcome.

Some rain yesterday and overnight at long last.  Decent amount too and most welcome after about a full month without any.  I like good weather but my word, we seem to get increasingly long periods stuck in a fixed weather pattern like March when it did little else but rain.

Down here in the centre of the French Pyrenees, we are also stuck in a weather pattern, totally different from the UK, and the many dry parts of France - we have been having daily, and all day, storms for nearly a month now!  The veg patch is completely sodden and puddly.  The peppers haven't grown since being planted out five weeks ago.  I did plant out 20 tomato plants three weeks ago, and amazingly they are hanging on in there, but not yet growing.
There are positives, though -
the early potatoes are the best we've ever grown,  with no damage from mole crickets who perhaps can't struggle through sodden light clay;
lettuces have been superb;
all the climbing beans are climbing as they ought to and are now flowering;
I've had almost 100% germination for sweetcorn, and it is growing well, they just need some hot sun;
 the local Trébonce onions are big and ready to start eating;
and I picked our first autumn raspberries yesterday, and they are going to give a terrific crop, they're definitely happy with the wet !
So a really weird year so far,  and definitely a worrying and difficult one for the farmers.

Here in my bit of France - near the Vendée coast - we have temps in the mid 20s which is very comfortable but absolutely no rain and some recent strong winds have been very drying.

We have tomatoes, chillies, courgettes and dahlias with their seep hoses on rotation for watering after 8pm.  Still a teeny dribble left in the water butts for pots up near the house and we have a bucket in the kitchen and the scullery for collecting water while we wait for the tap to run hot.   That's just enough for the herbs and spring onions by the terrace.
