Title: Digi Enhancement
Post by: kenkew on October 19, 2007, 21:55:53
It's here to stay and it's not only fun, it really does have a serious use. If you're already familiar with it, or if you'd like to be, this is a not a bad place to start asking and telling what you know, or would like to know.
Encouragement for newbies into this fast moving area will boost the chances and support for a dedicated place on A4A to show that talent and skill. Those of you asking for a contest for such photographs, well, here's a place to see who and what and how many we have.
Who's first off...?

but however, i cannot afford such things as paintshop pro and the like.

so i use gimpshop!
http://gimpshopdotnet.blogspot.com/

as far as i can make out, its virtually the same as psp but tis free! and legal! WOOOO!!!

You'll find quite a lot of things to do with your pic's using nothing more than what comes with windows. Practice with that before you go out buying expensive software.

I use the Gimp, which as you say is free, but I've never mastered it. I only use it for brightening up pics and sorting coin scans, but there's one thing I've never twigged. How do I clone a small bit of colour lifted off another part of the pic? I sometimes get irritating bits of dust on coin pics, and I really need to be able to get rid of them.

Expensive software is not an option......I just have not explored windows for enhancement of pics, guess what I will be doing tomorrow ;)

Not used 'Gimp', Robert. I'm told it's quite a goody for the money! But I'm sure there's others on here who will come back on your querie.

That's a cracker, dc2. I'd suggest putting it in 'The Gallery'.
Very nice.

If anyone would like a challenge - Ive been unsuccesfully trying to turn the picture below into something I can give the wife for her Birthday.

http://www.dsf.co.uk/test/Lucy-in-snow.jpg (http://www.dsf.co.uk/test/Lucy-in-snow.jpg)

its a picture of one of her rescue dogs that was too old and unwell to rehome so we let her see out the rest of her time with us (anticipated 6 months but she dragged it out for nearly 3 years!) Possibly the most well behaved and likeable dog we have ever rescued.

If anyone could turn it into a realistic setch or painting I'd be eternally grateful all my attempts just look artificial and photoshopped. Only down side is the picture needs to be good enough to print at a reasonable picture frame size eg 8"+ high.

Failing that i'm going to have to find an artist who could draw from the photo but dont know if i can afford this

Title: Re: Digi Enhancement

the one I did was enlarged to 8 inch high

Post by: glow777 on November 24, 2008, 20:58:08
it looks great on screen dc2 but pixelates badly when printed at size, more than likely because of my small original image (either that or the forum software resizes) - i was hoping that the image could be enlarged for printing and then the conversion would hide the pixelation with interpolation.

this is a weird one for me - as for one of my jobs i design websites - i have a degree in computing but i cant get this one imagine to look how i want it too! Ontop of that I think ive just broke a toe playing badmington  :-[

looking closer at your image it is good tho, what pckage/filter/settings did you use?

Ken.

For a good series on using The Gimp, download Full Circle Magazine issues 12 - 19
http://fullcirclemagazine.org (http://fullcirclemagazine.org)
The magazine is free as is The Gimp.

Hi All,

I'm completely new to this, but having read this forum I downloaded Gimpshop for use on a PC running Windows XP.  My problem is that I can't even find how to load an image.  There doesn't seem to be anything in the menu.  I tried opening a jpeg using Gimpshop and just got a message that libgimpui-2.0.0.dll was not found.  Anybody else having trouble even starting?

Thanks

Sorry for the late reply.

I use The Gimp (not GimpShop), with that you go the usual way,  [File], [Open], you then navigate to where the picture file is and click it.
