Title: Sad news.
Post by: ACE on February 06, 2012, 09:42:23
Poor old Flynn has just come back from the vets. His back has gone and they have drugged him up so he can get some sleep while we make up our minds what to do. They do not really want to operate on a 13 year old dog and alternative is, well you know what. I have been up all night with him and he could not lay down without yelping, so he has been stood most of the night. I always knew this would come one day but I am having a lot of trouble handling this. I always imagined he would just not wake up one morning, but this way is awful, I cannot bear to see him in pain.

So sorry Rob............if the vets are sure then we know we have to love them enough to say goodbye.I have seen his pictures and he looks a wonderful boy.

Tears in my eyes as I type this.......I know first hand the pain of this situation.

If he is drugged take a bit of time to come to terms with it in your head.

I am so sorry to hear about Flynn, Ace.  We have just gone through this with our dear Meggie and, like you with Flynn, we were hoping she would pass away in her sleep.  It didn't happen and we had to take her to be put to sleep.  It's an awful thing to have to do but it sounds as if Flynn is now in a lot of pain and you cannot let him suffer.   :'(   My thoughts are with you Ace.  Love and hugs are being sent to you, your wife and and Flynn.   :-*

So sorry to hear this and I can quite appreciate how you are feeling.  My own dogs are 12 & 14 and I know I will have to face it sooner or later.  It's so hard to imagine life without them after such a long time.

It is such a hard decision to have to make and you are bound to be upset, anybody who loves their pet would be.  I suppose we just have to forget about ourselves, and do what is best.

Thinking of you all,
Betty

We are fortunate to be able to let our pets go when their suffering gets too much for them.

Thanks for the replies. I was never a dog person until I found this  bundle of fur on a farm. The farmer did not think it had the makings for a working dog, he was a giant compared to the rest of the litter. So I took it home and he did grow big, but he was a big softy, he loves playing with children, has never bitten or growled and would welcome anybody into the house. He just gives a woof when he wants to go out. I'm welling up all the time just looking at his trusting face and knowing what we have to do. Just look how gentle he is with children, waiting until he is told to take the tidbit.

Really sorry to hear about Flynn, he looks such a great dog. My King Charles is 13 this year and people tell me that is a good age for a King Charles. When I say "my dog" she really was my late husbands dog and when her time comes I know that will make it such a big wrench.
I know you will make the right decision Ace, thinking of you.

I cried, but Nanny you never cry, when Basil Brush had to be put to sleep, my alastian dog.  But the vet was very good, we went back three times and he said it is your dog and your will know when enough is enough.  We stayed up all night with him stroking his ears, his back legs had gone, and a nasty man called out to me when I took him out for his last walk, that I was cruel.  But it was horrible to have to decide to have him to put to sleep, but luckily we had a good vet, and he said it is your animal and it is your decision, still a horrible one to make.  I cried so many tears for that dog, my best friend so many year.  I still feel for you, but no more dogs for me.  I love the cats, but that dog was really my best mate.

You really are a lovely lot of people.  The house seems empty without him but I have had some nice photos framed and we can now talk about him without welling up so much. We have had a good talk and decided to give it a couple of months and get another dog.  There will never be another Flynn and we would not get the same breed but we are confident we can give another dog a good home. I have always liked boxers, they look so lively and intellegent so now have to convince mother that they don't all slobber. She would like something in the larger spaniel or setter  line.

Like I say we are not going to rush into it but if any of you have these breeds, give us the lowdown.

We have the space, the patience and the knowledge it is the temperament of the breeds we are not sure of. But in the end a good dog is a reflection of the owners care.

Last year when we had to put our Brandy to sleep, we were supposed to have bit of a 'break' while getting our heads cleared from it all and eventually starting to look for a new family member. OH lasted a week when he started to whine after another dog...and within 2 weeks we had one.. ;D I wasn't in a hurry..but when it did happen it was my desicion that we take her (Amber) and never looked back.. ;D
Can't say anything about those breeds..we are terrier people..but many or our friends have had spaniels and I've never seen nasty one yet. They always seem to be most gentle breed and veeery loyal..brilliant with kids.

One of my neighbours had a boxer who insisted on going out with him when he took his very posh vintage car out - Henry would sit up in the back seat & always managed to give the impression he was about to give a gracious wave as he went by, a total character & gentleman.

So pleased that you have decided to get another little friend Ace. I'm sure that you learned so much from Flynn about his breed(collie). Why don't you get another Collie?Of course it won't be Flynn but from the sound of it you have the space for a very lively dog. There are I'm sure many rescues with Collies who have been too much of a handful for folks living in small spaces with no time to give the the excercise they need.
Whatever you decide I'm sure that it will have a lovely home.

I am delighted you have chosen to have another dog. When our dogs pass away we feel we could never have another one but with the Dogs Homes groaning with homeless animals surely we can find in our hearts more love to give to another animal.

Check out the Dogs Trust.......we sponsor a dog who can  not be rehomed..........they do great work.

I am sure Flynn would approve   :)

Hope you don't mind me putting up this link to Dogs Trust

I'm really pleased you are thinking of getting another dog Ace, will it be a puppy or would you have an older dog?

We used to meet a lovely Boxer in the park on our daily walks.  She was the same age as my Graham and they got on really well together.  Even Vera didn't mind her slobbering on her.

Oh...Squash..I love that photo..talking about body language.. ;D That boxer certainly knew when to put tale between her legs when meeting pair of terriers  ;D
We've got young boxer living nearby..and when ever we walk by, if it is in house..it just lie on front
of window and could not care if the sky fall down..so dopey, but when in garden it is like live wire..very funny character.. ;D

I hope you find another dog ACE and it will pay you to take your time to make the right choice of breed.

I was put off boxers as a child as my friend had one that used to slobber all over the place.  It also produced awful smells from its rear end.   :-X

Nearly fifty years later we bought our first and only dog Meggie, a gorgeous, lovable English Springer Spaniel.  She was wonderful with our grandchildren and never ever showed any aggressive tendencies.

We had to put her to sleep in January and we have said we would never have another dog.  However, if we changed our minds at any time, we would definitely choose another springer.

There is plenty of information about them on this website:

http://www.myspringer.co.uk/choosing-a-springer-spaniel.html

Meggie was small enough to sit on our lap to be cuddled and was very affectionate.  She didn't take up too much room in the caravan either.  See below.

I too would highly recommend the Dogs Trust and thought of you Ace, when they showed you 2 of a litter of six pointer crosses, needing a home, on the One Show, from the Dogs Trust.

I am sure you and Mrs Ace will know the dog that’s right for you when you see it.  Often they choose you.  Hope you’re both feeling a lot better it’s such an awful time when you lose a pet.

We looked into the dogs trust, but with grandchildren ranging from a few months old to 16 years we did not want to take on any dog with issues, I know you can train it out of them but we had decided it would be a new puppy or nothing.

Springers were high on our list in fact so high that a smelly little scrap has found it's way into our house today. Chumley as he will be known from now on,  is smelling a lot sweeter after a good bath and is now sleeping off a hearty meal. When something comes running up to you with it's tail wagging how can you say no.   I will put a piccie on tomorrow.

Yes glad news it will be on the next thread. We had a bit of a whirlwind day yesterday and after the excitement and a very long drive to view a few different pups, I didn't know if I was drilled, bored or counterpunched. My comment on getting a springer was right but it was not a springer we got in the end. It was a cocker spaniel. He is certainly bright even to the point of rushing in this morning from a walk around the garden to use the paper on the floor in the kitchen ;D I'm still felling a bit disloyal to Flynn, but it was nice to come down in the morning and be greeted by a wagging tail again. We will get him to our own vet tomorrow and make sure he is a good as he looks, he has been checked, but just to be on the safe side.

Just because you have got a new friend does not mean you will forget Flynn.   My grandmother had a cocker when I was a teenager.  I really love them.  It was totally nutty.  Fantastic at hide and seek.  It was very easy to train to fetch things.
Title: Re: Sad news.

I've had cockers just about all my life, Ace, and I can't really see past them. They're great lively, affectionate little dogs. My husband called them "greed with a nose"! Love walks but will do without if you're busy. Most of all they just love being with people.

Their only weakness (in my view) is their ears. Because of the shape of their ears they are prone to ear infections, but as long a you keep them combed and clean they are fine. I wish you many years of fun with Chumley.
