Title: Fuchsia cuttings
Post by: caroline7758 on July 21, 2017, 20:04:08
I took some cuttings from my fuchsias a few weeks back and although they are still tiny, they are sprouting tiny flower buds. I presume i should nip these out, but does it also mean that I did something wrong?

Nothing wrong, it's just trying to reproduce itself in case it dies lol

Pinch them out and feed them well, I'll have to remember to take my 'back-up' cuttings soon. I forgot to last year and a couple of varieties in pots in the greenhouse didn't make it through.

I spoke to a man on one of the fuchsia stands at Chelsea he said to fill a jam jar with water cover the top with tin foil and insert  the cutting into that once roots show pot on.

I may just give it a try.

This works well but generally better roots are formed when started in the same compost as the plants are going to grow in but works best for you is the best.

I Would like to increase  my fuchsia population  Can I use flowering stems if I remove the flowers /buds or must they be non flowering shoots  and  do they need a sliver /heel of old wood  and rooting compound or  none

Thanks tee gee, Good information. But how do you store yours ? do you lay the pots on their side or just make sure their kept frost free ?

I just make sure their kept frost free, but then I have a heated greenhouse where I set the heater to 35°F about 3°C.

The past two winters have been quite  mild so it rarely comes on.

As a back up I could use my hot bed which uses a lot less power, therefor cheaper to run.

A lot depends upon what is on the go during the winter months.

So yes! Keep them frost free!
