First bulk harvest

Up came half of my japanese onions that went in around November time. They have to come up now as the rot has started to rampage through the bed. No prize winners there, but these will see us though the summer until the next onions are ready...rot permitting!
Shallots also, again only half just to see how they were getting on. Quite a good size, much more productive than last year, but a few have the first signs of rot.

Cor, look good enough to eat! ;D Shame on the white rot though! :(

What a sight for sore eyes EJ. I bet they taste yummy too. I love onions in all shapes and sizes. We haven't ever grown shallots but must give them a go next season. Look great despite the rot. :) busy_lizzie

They look great, EJ but...er... is it just me? I can't see any rot. Not to dwell on the negative, but I'm growing shallots and it would be good to know - what should I be looking for?

Great looking crop there EJ I've got 60 J onion sets bulbing up nicely. It's the first thing I planted on my plot last winter so I hope I can manage to harvest them all without any rot. Like Amazin I'd like to know what the warning signs are. Ta :)

they look great. especially like the arrangment in the second photo too.
Can you still eat them by cutting the rot off? Is it just that they won't store?
Japanese onions on my list for autumn. Would you normally harvest them at the same time as spring-planted onions?

Thanks for the nice replies everyone. We are very pleased with them and have already enjoyed some!
Amazin and Wardy - check out my pic in pests and diseases. I have posted a couple of pics of some of my diseased onions. Afraid nearly all of them have white rot, just slightly, but enough to mean they won't store.
Aqui, yup, I cut off the icky bit and use as normal. Shame, but waste not want not and it doesn't affect the taste of the onion.

Cheers for the pointer EJ - I was looking for the rot in the stems, not the bulbs themselves! Now I know what to look for - the same thing that's on the onions in my veg rack right now!
