Plea from Magpie Di
« on: September 20, 2004, 16:35:56 »
As some of you may have noticed, Magpie Di has not been on the scene..computer probs!! So have asked her what the problems are and told her I would post here reply on here!  Here is the answer, we are hoping for a computer genius out there that can perhaps help get her back on this site!! I will copy any replies to her, thank you! ;D

Di says "well.....the worst thing appears to be ...every time i put a web address in the search bar of IE browser.......it comes up with a RED X message" Internet Explorer cannot access this address, operation aborted.......then the page just freezes...BUT sometimes if I hit the ok button often enough i can get into the page requested, but only for short while ....."  Asked if she had run virus checker, spyware etc and she said
"yeh !!!!!.....that's what's strange......regular updates from Norton ...but nothing wasfound ..did complete 'puter scan, have deleted all cookies and temporary internet files, ...that's what makes me wonder if it's just IE gone haywire for some reason....think i might see if there is a patch available....but so slow accessing microsoft website ..i give up !!"

1) To check your internet connection is OK
Depends on your version of windows ( if its windows youve got)
go to the MSDOS prompt (usually start-> Accessories or start-?programs.
in the black box type
ping www.google.com

If you get a 'network unreachable' sort of message then its a problem with your windows networking setup -
if you get a response
eg something like this
PING www.google.com (216.239.59.147) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 216.239.59.147: icmp_seq=1 ttl=245 time=33.1 ms
64 bytes from 216.239.59.147: icmp_seq=2 ttl=245 time=31.6 ms
64 bytes from 216.239.59.147: icmp_seq=3 ttl=245 time=33.3 ms

then your internet connection is OK and its a setup /config problem in your browser.

if you get nothing then try & ping the number
ping 216.239.59.147

if that is OK its a problem with your ISP ( you cant reach their DNS server)
you can try browsing by open IE and typnig http://216.239.59.147

As far as Im concerned AOL is the spawn of the devil for this sort of thing and  I find it almost impossible to sort out. Any other ISP is OK .
let us know what the answer to the ping thing is and we can tie it down a bit further.

And the reply from Di is...............

Many thanks ! Received your forwards from Jeremy and Motherhen :-)

Could you pass this reply on. Ta!

Firstly, have done the "ping thing" ( HaHa! ) and message returned was "
Packets sent = 4. Received = 4."

Also, was able to download Firefox, by using MSN Explorer, bit hit and miss,
but managed !

Next step is to replace IE with new downloaded version.

Fingers crossed.

Cheers guys ! You might just have restored my sanity! .......then maybe I
shall release my teenagers from the shed!  Well.....it's always their fault,
isn't it ?? !! HaHa !!
