Moving Strawberries
« on: December 12, 2003, 15:15:59 »
A friend has a load of strawberry plants that she wants to get rid of.  Not sure of the variety but they fruit in about end of June They can be thrown in my direction, but I am not sure when  is the best time to move them, (dont want to loose the lot) Also what are the best conditions for them?  Would they do better in a "strawberry tower" or in the ground?

Hi Mimi

I would say in the ground this time of year I have had no luck with towers.
Take as many as you can this time of year the growth is dorment so its great time to move them. The idea of a trench with a ridge in the middle and spread the roots over the ridge and hand fill and firm in by hand is best and dont forget to water to settle the roots in sound daft at this time with so much rain but to settle the soil round the roots. Also the old leaves cut away and any runners. You may lose some but never say no to free plants good luck Teresa

Hiya mimi, just reading this thread and thinking about my strawbs, and then it dawned on me!  I moved my strawbs to a permanent bed in my garden over the autumn, and moved the last few plants I found just a couple of weeks ago!  (Now I have a lottie I don't need a veggie patch in the garden, so I have scoured my garden looking for all my strawb plants and have moved them all up to my old veggie patch!)  They are all looking fine, the runners have rooted well and are growing like mad!  A couple of plants even have flowers for goodness sakes!!   ;D
