How do I get the berhoogers to germinate?

1 out of 5 so far, 3" pots on kitchen windowsill, roughly 20-22c.

I did mine in modules (one seed per module) in a heated propagator and got pretty good germination. (six out of eight courgettes, two out of two butternuts and four out of six patty pans).

Might be beginners luck, though - I've never grown them before.

I had the same failure rate when I used left over seeds from last year. With new seeds in loo rolls, one per roll, watered, cling film over the top. I usually do about twenty stand in a seed tray. Stand them in a warm spot that does not cool over night and in a couple of days they start to show. With new seeds I get a high germination rate.

I'll check the packet then, I only bought them a couple of weeks ago, but I suppose they could be old stock.
I only want 5 plants, so maybe I'll have to put the lot in and see what comes up.

No such problems with me melons, I wanted 2 for th g/house so I thought 3 to a 5" pot, 2 pots, just in case. Take out the weaker ones etc...

2 days later 4 came up in one, nothing in the other. Must have dropped an extra one in, methinks. Being the impatient sort, I scrabbled about in the second one for signs of life, of which there were none. 4 days and reality dawned when 6 little seedlings were all poking their heads out of the first pot!   ::)

you can repot them, though they dont like root disturbance.

the root system grows very fast very strong, so if you do want to repot, do it now! take your time peeling them apart very gently - they will probably loose all the earth between the roots.

i did two seedlings on saturday and gently repotted them and watered well, and they are now already growing their root system downwards (one pot is transparent) so no harm done there :)

Last years courgettes and cucumbers germinated fine for me and the squashes Doris sent me have have done well too. I think the first round were started in the airing cupboard, the second lot in the new propagator. I did them in modules, seed on edge &c.

Did my butternuts in an unheated propergator (on window sill - didn't get too cold overnight). 4 out of 5 came up quick + got potted on. Yesterday the 5th came up - that's about 3-4 weeks after the others.

Where are you Robin? I have spares, but I'm in Scotland!

Doesn't matter, I've just sowed the other 13 from the packet.

I'll surely get the other 4 I want.

Also, I noticed that the seeds were rather old, packed 1st half of last year, whereas the cu's were packed this year.

Might explain it.
