Disgusting Grub
« on: May 05, 2005, 22:59:02 »
This may seem like a daft question but can anybody help me please? While repotting some plants and moving others over the last week I discovered some revolting reddish brown grub like beasties in the compost. I'm not generally squeamish but these things are gross! Does anyone know what is likely to emerge from these things, one of which, by the way, was squirming at one end. I have removed them from their homes and placed them in a plastic bag to await results

Thanks for that. I have trawled the net looking for pictures to confirm but alas could only come up with pictures of the actual beetle. If it does turn out to be a ground beetle I shall replace them in the pots as they appear to be the gardeners friend

Any chance of a pic? I have a pretty fair library on bugs.

I can try a pic of the grubs but I'm not too clever at all this technical stuff. You will have to be patient with me

Before I even start on this journey of adventure it would appear that one of my boys has taken the digital camera. No doubt to get snaps of the "birds" at college. Will get it back from him later.

Is this what you mean? A moth chrysalis?

Normally reddy-browner than this. The pointed end wiggles!

It is that kind of thimg but a different colour...a reddish brown. Also I would have thought that a moth chrysalis would be above groung attached to a stem or branch...these delightful beasties were well buried in the pots

Colour? Took the words right out of my mouth - or somewhere!!

I normally find them when I'm digging the beds.
