Shrove Tuesday
« on: February 25, 2004, 01:14:16 »
Okay, who is sitting in front of their computer, or spent last nite sat lounging infront of the telly, stuffed full of pancakes?  We certainly are/did!  :o  Sprogs up to bed, after making them egg free pancakes, then Ava and I set about filling the kitchen with smoke, flying batter, sugar and anything else we could find in the cupboards.  I am a traditionalist - butter, sugar, lemon but Ava has golden syrup or chocolate spread or peanut butter!  Now I love peanut butter, but it just didn't work on pancakes for me.  Oh well, next big blow out - Easter! :P

My hubby bravely volunteered to make the pancakes last night.  After the fire alarm going off twice  ::) and at least three pancakes landing on the kitchen floor in a half cooked mess after some premature flinging  :o we managed to get two pancakes each.  Brown Sugar and Lemon Juice is the way we eat them.

Oh, the clear up afterwards  :o!!!

The kitchen was a real state... which hubby informed me was the whole idea so I would not ask him to do any cooking again.  The fact that he volunteered in the first place seemed to escape him!  :D

Mine turned out the best we have ever had last night. I did not bother to measure anything out, just put some milk and egg in a bowl, whisked up and then added flour gradually until I thought it was right - no measuring.  We have ours with sugar and lemon juice - delish ;D ;D   Does anyone else use this haphazard method ???

You guys have a national pancake eating day or something?

I just checked the dictionary, shrove, from the word shrive means either to make confession or to hear confession.

So with my Dutch logic I tried to figure it out. Confession and pancakes. Pancakes and confession. No, it makes no sense to me. Anything to do with religion? Carnaval, fast, easter? Not too familiar with that stuff.

Anybody care to enlighten this furnur?

We had some from M&S in lemon sauce - they weren't bad.....but lemon and sugar or maple syrup is what does it for me, so I think I might be make some at the weekend when I've a bit more time, not tired from the rigours of a day in London and sorting out the car which broke down in the underground staff car park and which couldn't be towed and needed to be recovered by a power-lift truck ......   :-/

Thank you Ross. I'm ashamed I know so little about my neighbors. Sorry folks, I guess I have to wait till next shrove tuesday to be forgiven. I should have googled it but never thought about doing that, just used the dictionary.

Why EJ, did you make the pancakes for the kids without eggs? In the explanation I read you are supposed to use up all your eggs and milk on this day.

As I was wondering why it took a while to get an answer a nasty thought creeped in. Could it be that some of you have forgotten where this tradition came from but didn't shrive it?

Ina, you might also want to google "Mardi Gras" to find out how some other cultures celebrate the Tuesday before lent begins. They can make eating pancakes seem quite staid!
