Compost Toilets
« on: April 26, 2005, 03:13:26 »
Hello!

I am new here so please be gentle. I am thinking about putting a toilet on the allotment site and would like to get some information about composting toilets. I have had the *toilet paper* (I like that name for it lol :D) and read through it. I am a little unsure about the composting toilet. Is it hygenic? Does it smell in the summer? What is it like to empty?

If you have one of these toilets on your site please could you give me some information and thoughts on what they are like.

Thank You!

A subject close to my heart  ;D  I have been swotting up for one on a community allotment so have been getting all the dope on the various options.  Got invited to look at a composting bog (described as the Rolls Royce of composting lavs) which is on the Pinfolds Allotments, Cudworth, Barnsley.  See other posts on this forum about it.  The contact names are on Toilet Paper.  The lady there says theirs gets whiffy but as many as 25 plus folks a day use it!!  Otherwise they are sound.  The best ones apparently use biomass willows which are grown round the facility and they draw up the liquids.  These get coppiced yearly and you can then use those for making hurdles etc.  The bog has to be moved every three years or so and the resultant compost used on the plot but not on food I'm told.  I have some info today on some rather posh composting bogs from Canada but they are for log cabins etc and do cost lots  ;D  They are an option though.  PM me for me stuff if you can't find what you're looking for by googling or on this forum  ;D

lol Good luck :) I know what you mean by planting takes up allot of time. I have not started yet. I have only planted my shallots and some caulies which the pigeons have eaten :( so I am a little late this year. Its due to the weather and a little ill health. So this week I want to get caught up with my planting :)

Kitty   The composty willow bog could become a reality!    My lotty neighbour with tiny shed (looks like a privvy) says she's got a second hand shed and we can have her shed as  a lav  ;D  Hope she gets her new shed soon so we can start the project  ;D

I am thinking of having a compost toilet. The only concern I have is the smell and the emptying of the stuff at the bottom (no pun intended with the word bottom :D).

SS   You don't empty it  :)   Your bog could be in position for about 3 years if not used very much.  If you plant biomass willows around it they suck up the liquid so the product you're left with should be nice and crumbly (don't quote me as I;m no expert)  You then put the "compost" around shrubs, etc (not eatables) and move your lav to another spot.  To get rid of the smell there is a plastic downpipe which goes into the space under the bog and up the side of the shed and this has a fly screen in it but this helps to provide air flow to get rid of pong and to help the composting process.  Apparently blackberry clippings go in or comfrey leaves to help to start things off.  I've got an invite to go to the Pinfolds Allotments at Cudworth, Nr Barnsley to look at theirs. They are very proud of it and encourage visitors to use it  :)

Yes it is a itreresting Idea. I thought about building myself a single man loo on my plot. Just to test it out to see what it would be like before commiting to a big one for the site.
