Topic: advice on filter boxes

need a little advice on buying a new filter box, both my filter box and uv has had there day the uv only works when it feels like it and the filter box had sprung leeks all over .So it time this week to replace both of them ,have heard that combind uv and filters are not that good allways have had separate uv and filter i noted that margaret said she likes the black box filter is that the one with just foam in it ,so any advice would be good as i really do have to get a move on to replace both of them and i would really like to try and buy what works best as u can be talked into buying allsorts at aquatic shops

hi dibber, sorry I can't give any advice except - don't buy from an aquatics shop, their mark-up is horrendous. Do a google when you have the name of the filter you want. You will be surprised at the variations in price - and most offer free next day delivery above a certain amount. I found www.all4fish.co.uk to be very helpful and extremely price competitive.

Hi Dibber and Tricia. I would never go back to separate filter and UV.For the last 4 years i have had a green genie by lotus on both my ponds and they have been superb.If you go to www.watergardening-direct.co.uk you will find them there plus lots of advice.They are a very reputable company who are actually just down the road from me and have given me immense help over the years.Their prices are reasonable too.There are other types of box filters also ,and the company will advise by phone if you prefer.

It does have just the foam in it.I had one before with brushes but prefer the foam and the plastic things at the bottom that the bacteria grow on. It can be half buried which makes it easier to hide and if you need a more powerful one it has 2 outlets for the hoses which helps prevent any flooding.

I currently have a couple of Hozelock integrated UV filter boxes which seem to work fine.  Although I've never used anything else so I'm not sure how they would compare to others on the market at present.

The only advice I can give would be to emphasise that of Tricia’s.  When I bought my Ecomax 9,000 at the back end of last year I couldn't believe the difference in price from one store to another.  I think I actually saw the same Ecomax somewhere for £149.99 + P&P and finished up buying it for about £70 from e-bay in the end.  Do look around. thanks to all of u for your advice on filter boxes, as i really wonted to try and get it right as they don't come cheap,in the end after looking at all websites peeps had given me found a local chap that runs a aquatic shop from his home , i think he done me a good deal i ended up buying a biotec 5/10 filter box with a oase briton 72watt UV which attaches to the side payed in the end 270 pounds which seemed about right looking at other website just hope it does the job and works well on my pond
