3 sisters
« on: April 25, 2005, 20:30:35 »
I do not have a huge amount of space so would like to have a try with the 3 sisters method.  Does anyone use it and if so what sort of spacings are needed?
I have about 20 sweetcorn plants, 4 pumpkins, 5 courgettes and loads of french beans (dwarf).  Would these combinations work?

Yeah

Climbing beans would be better - the idea  is the  sweetcorn provide support for the climbing beans, and shade for the squash. The squash provide ground cover acting as living mulch + prevent evaporation. The beans fix nitrogen for the squash + sweetcorn. Hope that makes sence.

Space the sweetcorn as normal (as a block), but miss out enough in the patten to place your pumpkin + squash (make them quite even)

Then plan the beans at the base of each sweetcorn.

Justy if you put three sisters into the search facility here, it comes up quite a bit and you might find it handy! ;D DP
