getting ready to go
« on: February 27, 2021, 13:01:20 »
Rotovated half the plot this morning, dry enough not to get clagged up with muddy boots, cold enough to so no worm churning as they must still be down deep. Should have done the whole plot really but it felt like it was dragging my arms out of the sockets. A tube of deep heat wanted now.

Well done you.   I popped out this morning as it was so clear and sunny but retreated indoors again cos there's a perishing breeze that really gets in my nethers.

Will try again later as I have 2 redcurrants to move into th enew fruit bush bed and then I can lay a seep hose and cover it all with chipped bark.

Bit nippy, but still got lots done, poly cleared and re-organised. Garlic hand weeded, still too sticky for hoeing. A huge heap of compost sieved ready for the tubs in the poly so a  few peppers and toms started on the heat mat to go in them next month. Rounded up all the tools cleaned them off and hung them up on the hooks.

Sunny and dry here but there's a perishing north wind that makes it very unpleasant so all I've done outside for the last few days is finish moving fruit bushes into their new bed, lay the seep hose and pile on the chipped bark which the chooks promptly rearranged.   I've also watered pots of trailing fuchsia, citrus and nectarines to get them ready for re-potting but otherwise am hibernating and waiting for a kinder wind.

Still haven't sown toms and chillies.  Far too cold in the PT to move them on.

Picked some PSB and a lemon for our dinner?   Tasty.

I counted up yesterday - 105 tomato plants, all pricked out and ready to go.  Dozens of peppers and chilis too, bought 5 aubergines for a € at the market and have sown loads of flower seeds.  It's a shame but the monthly markets are all off limits and they are great for picking up plugs and reminding you what to plant.
The ground here is really wet though.  It's 20c+ out there but we had a couple of inches of rain on Thursday so our main field is flooded again.  The veg patch is better drained but still very wet to walk on but there are a few areas ready to plant out so some cabbages and broccoli will go out today.
Early spuds are in along with some kale, parsley, rocket and a row of golden beetroot and one of spring onion.
I thought it was still early but looking at the place next door I am quite behind the curve!
Moved to Portugal - ain't going back!

Planting stuff in dribs and drabs - the allotment is still cold and damp, and very exposed, so I would never start too early, except that I have zero patience!

So I've got some chillis started, some Chater's double hollyhock (if they don't come true... well, I love hollyhocks anyway), leeks, onions and celeriac sown in the propagator, a few peppers started yesterday, some early peas in the greenhouse in guttering, broad beans in roottrainers (very experimental, dunno if that's a good idea or not), and my winter onions and shallots are already out. Oh, and the spuds are chitting in the back passage (it's at the back of the house, and it's a passage, what would *you* call it?).

Apart from that, I haven't done anything...

Bullet bitten today as I have a weeks annual leave this week: chillies, peppers and toms all
in the big propagator this morning....and so it begins! 😋😌
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Yesterday I retreated to the polytunnel for a tidy up and re-organisation of the potting end - all helped by 6 nosy chooks and both cats so very entertaining but slow.  The wind is till cold here so I stayed in there and potted on the 3 citrus plants using some specialist compost I found the other day.

It's still unusually cold here at night - -5C last night - so I have yet to sow my chillies and toms as this house has no indoor windowsills so I need the PT to stay warm enough at night for when I do have seedlings to move in there and grow on in full light.

Meanwhile, OH is removing the huge sheet of plastic (offered by our farmer neighbour 2 years ago) so we can lay out more raised beds and guess what's creeping anemically along the surface!   Masses of bindweed.   Humph.
