Chopping up a pallet
« on: November 10, 2019, 17:07:59 »
I got a pallet to saw  up make into dividers between different things in the allotment.
I have only have a saw.
It is taking for ages, the problem is where the slats are joined to the main bit, i.e. trying to pull them out - any ideas?

I'd use a wrecking bar  - you can pull a pallet apart in minutes with one.

screwfix sell an item called a pallet buster made by Roughneck.
I bought one last week and it makes light work of it. I can break down a pallet in 5 mins now with minimal effort :)

Thank you both. I just used a fork and body weight and it seems to be fine - much quicker than sawing it.

Standard and Europallets:
Knock off the underside tie strips.
Select 2 house bricks and support a slat. Drive down the bearer, hence drawing nails. Move bricks to next slat. Repeat.
This should remove all slats , with nails left strait for hammering , or driving back.
Remember all blue (CHEP) pallets are not legally retained or repurposed.
All wooden pallets imported (or exported) will have been treated with insecticide.
The lifespan of salvaged slats can be extended by treatment with raw linseed oil. Cheapest source for this is from horse food suppliers (such as Mole Valley Farmers/SCATS), where it is VAT Zero rated.
