Anyone get a touch of frost llast night?
« on: September 08, 2019, 11:22:39 »
Walking round our allotments this morning (Thames Valley, just north of the Cattle Crossing), I noticed a lot of very floppy looking squashes and pumpkins, and although the courgettes are still upright some of the flowers look as though they were nipped. Some potatoes looking poorly, others fine, so it must have been the lightest of touches of ground frost if that's what it was.

Seems very early for the soft south!

Really hope not! I haven’t been able to get up there yet, but sadly had just cut away some of the squash leaves to allow the sun to get at them....Hoping I haven’t let the frost get them instead. I’m at the top of a slope so hoping that it didnt get my stuff - it does tend to get those people at the bottom of the slope instead.

Confirmation from a mate at the other end of the meadow - he saw temperatures down to 3 (C, not K). His plot is raised enough that his  stuff seems OK, but his neighbour who has spent less time building the plot up had a few things nipped. Normally it's at least another month!

...and a visit tonight revealed a lot of black and crispy squash plants. Absolutely definitely a frost.

one here the last two nights, no frost damage yesterday but will see what it's like for the squash plants when I get round to the plot later.

Frost at Etwall outside Derby Tuesday night and frost on the car when OH went off to work at 06:30 this morning... spent most of yesterday lifting the squash, moving the bananas and kaffir Lime and getting them under cover steeling myself to go down and see the bottom plot.

Ground frost in KIdlington on October 2nd - just a ground frost as even the runner beans seem to still be alive.

If I can work out how to attach a pic you'll see the whoppers I found hiding when we moved the aubergines under cover and poked the cucumber plant!

I love wonderful discoveries lurking in autumn.  All I found was a whole lot of beans low down on one plant which I could not see because a nearby tomato had sprawled into the bean plant and hidden them.  An extra pound of beans for the freezer.

Nice find Adrian, congratulations!

No frost here but the sweet potatoes looked a little burned so we took all the butternuts and other squash.  Due to the recent rain they had started fruiting again!
Moved to Portugal - ain't going back!

Well, the aubergine made a vast Baba Ganoush, and a friend took the cucumber. I must ask what she did with it (or maybe I shouldn't...), as I'd have thought it was far too bitter and seedy for consumption.

No more frost here - shouldn't complain, should I?

No frost here but everything that can be harvested is safely picked and stored. My stab at xmas potatoes are still to be dug. They will be Halloween potatoes I think else the critters will be feasting on them. Cleared an overgrown corner of the poly and found a nice water melon which the grandson ate and declared was very sweet. Just a few more toms to eat then back to the supermarket 'leather jackets' if they are allowed to be brought into the country. The new grapevines are getting to the top of the supports and have been boosted by the late summer sun. Onion sets and garlic in also the broad beans just starting to show.
