I grew San Marzano last year and they were wonderful.   Growing them again this year.

However, when it came to cooking up the crop to make passata I ended up with so many I just put all the ripe tomatoes in regardless of shape tho I did separate the yellows and oranges from the reds of all sizes.

Are you talking about it's taste as a raw tomato or its taste after cooking?
IMO none of the cooking plum toms taste of much at all until they've been cooked and the liquid reduced, that's what you taste in tinned tomatoes.
San Marzano for me is one of the worst for getting blossom end rot though, so I don't grow it any more. I'm growing Polish Linguisa after last year's trial (still doesn't taste of much raw though ;) )

Amish Paste might be more to your liking.

San Marzano are definitely for cooking and are always recommended by chefs as the best tinned tomatoes.   There are better varieties for eating raw.

Super Mama are a great pasting tomato.  Grew them last year - big fruits, tasty and productive.

It's the cooking which reduces the water content and makes the taste come through strngly. Even the liquid in tins of toms has been much reduced before they're canned.

Just a point to note, Purple Ukraine has very wispy foliage and can look quite unwell, but this is normal for this variety ;)

Tomato Christel's Plum (I got them from HSL) is a good plum as well, I've saved seeds for years and its still performing well, very prolific.
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴
