frustrating !
« on: February 02, 2019, 19:30:16 »
Already to start after Christmas on plot repairs, applying manure, turning compost etc. and then after making marmalade two lots one day for us and next day one lot for parents, following day on plot barrowing manure find in evening hand swollen excrutiating pain.
This goes on for couple of days, family say go to GP. I think should hopefully resolve itself or will go to GP after weekend if no improvement. On the Sunday afternoon cannot bare pain anymore, taking as many paracetamol as allowed in one day plead to be taken to out of hours referred to casualty, xray, given splint and go home. 2.00am Monday morning having not slept and remaining in excutiating pain, nearly fainting go back to casualty at 5am. Referred to fracture clinic later that morning. Fortunately hand specialist happened to be working in fracture clinic and told me I need urgent surgery on hand for carpel tunnel ( I knew I had this for last 10 years and in last 2 had been given steroid injections), trigger finger and probably have arthritis and may a have permanent damage. I am now waiting to attend appointment to put all this in motion

Not sure when I will have the surgery, but probably will affect the whole of the growing season and I have more than one plot and spend many hours on plots. Although have pain at times now 3 weeks since original injury, not as swollen but am very frustrated at not being able to do much, however amazed at how much I can do with my left hand ( non dominant one)

Really hope that you get sorted in time to enjoy  your garden this year.
Sounds extremely painful. Can you mulch or cover some parts to make life easier whilst one handed?

I had the op a few years ago, back to work a fortnight later. Just a small nick  in the wrist and a ream out inside, all done in ten minutes. Most likely with carpel which they reckon it is non urgent  you will not get done until next autumn, if at all. I worked left handed for years when the pain got too much. You adapt very quickly, I could even use a wheelbarrow with the aid of a strap over the shoulder on to one of the handles. I did read the other day that carpel tunnel ops were one of those they were thinking of stopping so you might need to go private or just grin and bear it.   https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-44665560

Thanks for the replies

I have gone over to no dig, but still requires applying mulch, I have tried using right arm instead of hand to lift fork and wheelbarrow but very limited and end up then not being able to sleep due to pain. We are fortunate as have pay back scheme who have a couple of plots and they sometimes help plot holders. They have helped with applying mulch.
Its all those other jobs cutting up brussel sprout  stalks to compost, tried using spade in left hand but bounced off when stalk got harder and need to be careful about other hand as carpel tunnel in this hand although not as bad. I also start sieving all the compost from my manure bins of which I have several to mix with bought compost for planting on and putting in potato bags and containers I use for tomatoes
Its just I like to be able to just get on and do things and not have to rely on others.
