Apple Trees not bursting into life yet
« on: April 03, 2005, 10:07:14 »
planted a couple of varieties beginning of last month, they were bare rooted, I followed the instructions that came with them, but there isnt any sign of life in them yet, is it still too cold for them? I have one in a large pot in the greenhouse thats just started sprouting after a week in there, any ideas?

Had a look today, seems the warm weather as finally burst them into life

Mine have lovely little tight green buds on and I can just make out the blossom clusters.  My cherries are the same.  Don't rush them, a late frost could do alsorts of damage!

Emma,

thanks for the reply, I was beginning to wonder if they were dead.

They haven't really had time to get their roots growing yet!

My bare rooted ones planted this year (except the crab) are still to show any signs of life (although I keep kidding myself I can see some), although the ones I planted last year are bursting out all over. So Clayhithe is right and they just haven't got establishde yet. I hope.

Where are you?

I'm in London and mine has only just starting showing signs of life this weekend. Yours might be a couple of weeks behind, depending on where you are.
gone to pot :D

state of my apples:
early Windsor - buds opening and flowers showing.
tripover (unknown early soft eater) buds about 2 days behind EW
Tip-bearing unknown storable eater - buds just bursting
Egremont Russet - buds just bursting
Bramley - still snoozing.

(greengage - total tart, flowering like crazy)

They always do this,  and I'm always worried the Bramley won't have any friends to pollinate it but it always does.
This was April 24th 2002 - the russet deciding to hide all its branches under blossom.
