1st rhubarb harvest
« on: April 05, 2018, 18:38:41 »
Visited  my soon to be ex-allotment as I was back in the area following my move to S. Wales, and harvested 6.5kg of beautiful rhubarb.
Now prepped and in the freezer for jam and chutney brews when I've time.
Back in the area in 6 weeks time, so I'll be able to pick some more!

Have had three pickings of short but very tender stems so far.

The "offspring" of the parent plants back in E. Mids have just been planted in their new home in South Wales. One of my new allotment neighbours did ask if I was going to plant them or take them to the kitchen!
They were split from the parent stock in October and planted in buckets with holes in bottom. Let's hope they like their new home and settle in quickly!

Picked about a pound of sticks from my three plants this week, enough for a rhubarb and custard tart. The plants look small for this time of year, and one tried to flower, so I guess our weather is to blame again!
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Made the first batch of Rhubarb Gin and Vodka as it is going nuts on OH's plot.  Mine looks terrible and very late though.

One rhubarb question - I get a very dry tannin taste from mine.  Is that due to the age - it is fed and watered fairly well but it has been there longer than I have.
Moved to Portugal - ain't going back!

Cut a few inches off the stem from below the leaf and peel the stalk.
We find that helps the acidity.
Otherwise bin yours and speak nicely to the Missus about using hers!
