Flamethrowers

(1/1)

alexexxxxxxxxxxxxC:
Hi all.. does anyone use a flamethrower to clear weeds?

Thanks

Alex

John85:
Yes
What do you want to know?

hippydave:
I use a sheen x500, bloody good bit of kit.

Paulh:
Great fun, not sure it really works better than using weed killer or hoeing.

ancellsfarmer:
Yes, occasionally.
The long established Sheen x300. There was also the x500, with a 'golf trolley'with hood to trundle it about.
These can be found pre-owned on Ebay, Gumtree etc for around £45 subject to interest. Running parts are available from various on-line sites. Once restored, they go on for years with a little TLC.
Basically they are a pump-up blow lamp affair, bit thirsty for paraffin (£7.95 for 4 litres!!) The best advice is to scorch the weeds to boiling point, unless looks matter, do not linger to incinerate. This saves running time(and fuel)
LPG guns are also available, the little cylinders cost lots, the larger Calor type are heavy but more economical. Tractor mounted versions exist for the small-holder grower.
