the worst sound
« on: July 17, 2017, 15:37:59 »
in the garden, it's when you are lifting potatoes and you get that squish as the fork goes into one.....or today, into three! I hadn't realised quite how dry my soil was under the foliage, I made a right mess of it. My last but one Nicola....first time I've grown these, finding they take an age to cook, is that typical does anyone know?

The forked spuds get used first, usually that day, you only lose a bit. Getting such a big crop this year you cant help hitting them, although a longer fork and start the first dig further back helps, but you need to be strong to lever them up.

I was going to say "Time gentlemen, please".

But I see you are thinking about sounds in the garden, and when I'm on my allotment, nothing absolutely nothing disturbs me.
Not mad, just out to mulch!

Heard that sound this morning.   Not good but we still use them as soon as possible.  The first slug damage is now appearing on my main crops (Desiree) so I'm going to lift them all.  they are mostly of a good size and I would rather lose a few small ones than have them eaten by those slimy little buglers.

At least you got enough tubers to be able to hit them with a fork. Under the row I dug today you would have been very very unlucky to hit a tuber at all. I reckon we got about 10 lbs from a 20 foot row. And I did not hit one with the fork!
Gardening is the great leveller.

Johhnrco what growing medium do you use?  Soil, compost bought/your own?
