The egret has arrived
« on: June 20, 2017, 11:23:24 »
I have used an egret who came to share my breakfast many years ago now in Luxor.  One the way to my plot yesterday there was one sitting on a trees at the edge of the lake in the adjoining nature reserve.  Though I think it was bigger than the Egyptian one.

There are two sizes.  The larger one is heron sized and behaves very much like a heron preferring damp habitats with frogs and so on to scoff.   We'd get them as winter visitors in Belgium.    Very occasionally we'd see the smaller kind which tend to live with cattle.

Round here they grow Blonds d'Aquitaine and Limousins for beef and there's often a group of the smaller ones in the cattle fields in late summer and autumn.   Haven't spotted any this year yet tho they were occasionally seen flying over last winter.

The new arrival here is definitely heron size, the white makes it look even bigger.
We have lots of herons but not seen an egret here before.
