Strange non-twining Japanese Honeysuckle?
« on: May 29, 2017, 15:31:41 »
Last year I invested in a pack of Non-Anonymous Mix Seed from Chilterns Seeds. They sell you a mixture of unusual seeds to sow but also give you a list of the plants the seed came from. You never know quite what is going to grow and each year we have fun working out what they are.
Last year wasn't a good one for the pack but we have several plants that, as far as I can see, (based on the list) they must be Lonicera Japonica (variant unnamed). However instead of twining up things they produce stems that tend to spread over the ground instead of twining up things. Has anyone heard of this type before?

Picture of the plant attached.

They look quite normal to me and very healthy.  They don't seem to have a support to climb up so are bound to sprawl.   Try planting them near a suitable tree or shed or trellis and then watch them climb and twine.   You'll need to guide them a bit at first.
