Brad,

hope you don't mind me moving the message - it's probably more suited in the board.

Good Luck

PS

Check this thread out.  Some good general advice about finding a site.

Hi Brad

You probably have already tried your local council?  Many (most?) have some sort of Allotments Officer - in Leeds he's in the Department of Leisure Services.

They should at least be able to point you to those --- and should be able to tell you about any other allotment sites.  But then they "should" be able to do lots of other useful things!!!

All best - Gavin

Where I live in the NEast, some of the local rail network has allotments running along its length.  If you have similar, contact railtrack, or the local equivalent.  Good luck

I'm also trying to find the owners of an allotment site in South East London (Nunhead - near Nunhead cemetery) but have had no luck. The Council failed to supply any info. Does anyone know of some sort of allotment association?
Many thanks
T

I know its a bit cold for it, but if there is no notice board, hanging around the site until you spot a plotter to ask may work!

I had tried to rent an allotment at my nearest site for a couple of years, eventually getting one some distance away. Not being a driver, I did my best on my bike but not much fun at al. The council just kept telling me about the huge waiting list even though it looked as though some plots had not been used for years. In desperation, I nailed a load of notices around the allotment, asking if anyone wanted help, not even minding about getting produce - I just wanted to get in there and dig as I have a tiny garden at home. To my amazement, a tenancy plopped through my door from the council, offering me a site. Apparently, someone at the site had sent my details to the allotments officer. The problem here was because our rent is so cheap (£8 per year), some people had been paying several years in advance (which I had thought was not allowed but....) I was given asite which had belonged to an elderly chap who had died and one of the other lottie renters had informed the city council. I still do not know who it was but I am really grateful. Our site is right in the middle of town and there is a lot of pressure for developement so it is in the interests of all lottie renters to be seen to be using the site to its full potential (not the case on my site). I guess if you are wanting an allotment, it might be worth the personal approach to other users who are often much more aware of what is happening than the local council.
