Seren unwell
« on: April 19, 2017, 08:13:34 »
Seren didn't eat all her breakfast yesterday and was really subdued. I made an appointment with the vet in the afternoon. She had a high temperature but the vet couldn't give a clear diagnosis although several possibilities. She was given an antibiotics and an anti inflammatory injection and i brought her home, with an appointment to return this morning. Ive been sponging her paws ears and tummy with water to help reduce her temperature and she does seem cooler. She managed to eat a small dinner yesterday but she won't look at food this morning, she has had a drink though.

I think she's feeling worse than yesterday as she stayed on her bed when I came downstairs and barely a quiver of her tail. Poor poppet, she looks at me as if I should be able to help her discomfort and I can't. Don't know what to say really, she's miserable and so am I.

Thank you.

I'm just back from the vets, her temperature is still high and as she is not responding to the injections she had yesterday or showing any other obvious symptoms they have kept her in to do tests. I can't believe what a wrench it was leaving her there.

Best place at the vets. I got myself in state about Dulce having to stay in animal hospital. Hope you have good news soon. Know how upset one gets as animals are so trusting, but vets are very good.

Seren's temperature went up a little further yesterday while she was at the vets on a drip for fluids and antibiotics, so the vet wanted her to remain on a drip and be monitored through the night. My vets doesn't have an overnight service so I took Seren up to the emergency out of hours vets. It was lovely to spend a little time with her and reassuring to see she still had a slight wag to her tail.

She looked a bit brighter this morning when I collected her first thing and her temperature was down to just under 40C, which was great. But by the time I drove her to the vets (with windows open and cold air blowing, blimey I was cold!) it had gone up to 40.5. They said it was best for her to go back on intravenous and for them to do a, I think an ultrasound and then if they found nothing to take xrays. They sent off further blood and urinary samples yesterday, though they don't expect the results from these until friday or saturday.

Other than a fever and obviously feeling very unwell and lethargic, she isn't showing any other obvious symptoms, so they are just looking to cross off the most likely causes.

Poor little doggy, if you'd seen her face when she realised I brought her back to the vets or her eyes when I left her there this morning, so sad.

Hope Seren will get treatment and will respond better soon.  Not knowing what it is and for her to stay in for intensive care must make things worse.  Sorry you had a rough few days, Jayb!  Hug!

Seren was allowed home for the night on thursday, which was lovely if not short lived. Sadly no improvement when I took her back to the vets on friday morning. She's been referred on to an Animal Hospital in Bristol. They did several more tests yesterday, more blood tests and urine samples taken, plus a lumber punch and CT scan. From the results they have had back so far they haven't been able to determine what's wrong, but they do seem to be narrowing it down. Despite not getting the results expected they are still leaning towards an unidentified infection somewhere or a form of meningitis.

I was impressed with the hospital, the vet I spoke to seemed very knowledgeable and confident in finding out what is wrong. Best of all, she and the  other staff I saw had a lovely way with Seren. Must admit I didn't want to leave her again and it's got to be so confusing for her but after seeing the place I did feel happy to leave her, even though it's a couple of hours away.

My head feels like it's shut in the shed, I'm so glad she has medical insurance and hopefully I won't have to worry there. I was only thinking a couple of weeks ago it seemed an awful lot of money to be paying out monthly, so, so happy I didn't cancel or reduce the sum.

Thinking of you, so difficult to relax with that on your mind. I agree vets are so kind, and lucky you are insured, bill will be high, but will receive the very best treatment.

Yes some yesterday, not very good though and not confirmed. More tests being done monday morning and they would hope to have the results that evening. I'm so gutted for her and trying to think and remain positive for her. I had a good cry yesterday which kind of helped, but to be honest I feel sick to the bottom of my stomach. The vet yesterday said she would go straight and give her cuddles and hugs from me.

Waiting for the vet to phone today with an update.

Jayb, this is so, so dreadful.  Pretty much whatever it turns out to be, it is a serious illness and poor Seren will need treatment and recovery time.  And standing by the phone waiting for it to ring and also dreading when it does, is awful for you too.  Yes she is in the best place she can be, but that does not lessen the worry or the severity of the illness.  We watch supervet on channel 4 sometimes and one thing that is always amazing is just how quickly dogs can recover, once their issues are addressed.  Hope Seren will be very quickly on the road to recovery too.

Thinking of you  :angel11:

Oh Jay, I have only just seen this and my heart goes out to you.

I hope so much that whatever is wrong with Seren that it is treatable.  I remember how upset we were when Meggie was diagnosed in the hospital at Bath with stomach cancer when she was 12 years old, but your lovely Seren is so young and still a puppy.

I am thinking of you Jay and very much hope that Seren's diagnosis is treatable.  {{{hugs}}}

I want to echo everyone else's thought and good wishes for Seren, hopefully they will be able to find the best treatment for her and she'll recover quickly.

And please be kind to yourself too, it's much harder for you because she can't worry about her health like you can.

I know how horrible it was when my Summer was ill, but she was 15 and I suspected it was her time to leave us, it has to be so much harder having those kind of thoughts about a much younger dog.

Big hugs from me xxx
