I've come a bit late to this, but here goes.....My crowns have been going for 35 years. I never water them, they are next to my JA's with no problems, and they only get mulched if I have compost to spare. My biggest problem is asparagus beetle, but not every year, this year I only caught a few right at the beginning (late march for me). So my conclusion is that once they get established nothing will stop them.

I'm delighted to hear that, small, I shall let mine get on with it! I've had asparagus for about 15 years, and 2020 was the first year I actually planted crowns - the rest has been retrieved from blown-in seedlings, which suffered badly in 2018. Mind you, so did almost everything else.
My garden is smaller than your Rome, but my pilum is harder than your sternum!

Some of my most productive crowns are from self sets... If they aren't in the way I leave them to it.. they (self sets) get no attention but are a pleasant bonus.
