Jut got my council bill for my plot , seems they have increased the water rate over 250% to £21.55 per plot, I'm hoping its an error ! wondering what A4A members with water on site pay per year please

Hello Picman.

Our water rates are £4.50 per plot - no hose pipes allowed except for filling up water butts.

On my site the water is metered and the cost varies depending on how much we use per season.

The council here put up the price by 20% last year and brought in water saving rules (no hosepipes, no underground watering systems etc)
in an effort to stop the water bill rising. If the bill has gone up, they said they will raise the plot price to cover it.
So everyone will have to pay for the few that overwater :(

I'm trying to get an idea how much councils charge in UK for water per plot , this year mine is  £21 I think is over the top , if you could post your water charge it would help . thanks.

Our water charges are included in the rent.  Fill your watering cans from troughs and carry them back to your plot. A high proportion of tenants have water butts filled from their shed roofs which helps.

Rent is around £3 per pole, so a typical ten pole plot would be roughly £30 each year. There is an additional £1 association fee.  However, anyone over 60 gets a fifty percent discount.

I feel very very fortunate. The field is close, so I can walk to it in about 15 minutes. Crime and vandalism thankfully very rare. Good soil, rich and productive. The field is well run, the shop sources bulk purchases of seeds and opens Sunday morning through summer staffed by volunteers for sale of the usual supplies like canes, nets, fertiliser etc  and even without the discount the ground rent is good value. Long may it continue.

Cheers

Our allotment rent for last year was  £73.14 with water and £36.04 without water

this year which is due in November will be £77.52 with water and £38.20 without water

we have had no water since last November as there  is a serious leak in an adjoining car park on which the council has erected large storage containers and the leak is under one of the containers which the council will not move so water board turned the water off I dont have any livestock but those with chickens and ducks have had to take 40 gallon tanks in wheelbarrows I will miss water once the growing season gets going

We don't have water- well, only what we collect in butts. Rent is £21. No extras provided so none charged for!

Like hippydave our water is metered and we pay for what we use. To keep it simple for everyone water is included in the rent at £33 per half plot. I think it averages out at about £700/year for the site (100-ish half plots). Perhaps check that the Council isn't charging you for waste as well as water as that seems incredibly high. Could your site be metered? The initial cost might be worth it for later years, or you might find out that people are running a hose or two more often than they should in summer.

Note to add - we're fully self-managed.

Thanks for all the feedback, :icon_cheers: I am trying to get the committee to look into handling the site water bill, it has a water meter shouldn't be that difficult to work out...

We are metered and tenants are supposed to only fill water butts with hoses then use cans to water the garden but some flout this and use hosepipes.  I do disconnect them if I see it and remind them.  Our annual water bill is in excess of £1200 per yer across 120 plots.  Rents are £24 per year all in.
