Jazzy potatoes......good yield, so far so good!
« on: August 05, 2016, 13:13:57 »
I dug up my raised bed of Jazzy potatoes today, almost a full trug of usable potatoes in total of suprisingly big spuds, a bit like a more knobbly Charlotte, so far they are living up to their hype. Taste test this lunchtime! Swedes going in next....

If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

I had some for lunch, made a potato salad. Taste very similar to Charlotte, buttery firm yellow flesh, very nice. I forgot to mention, very little damage, no scab, one or two in the whole lot had a slug in, so overall a very successful experience, would certainly grow them again.

I've grown  both Harlequin and PFA, they taste too nutty for me, a bit like Brazil nuts which I dislike personally. Harlequin is a cross with a similar taste and I had a lot of very titchy tubers, so wouldn't grow again as I prefer the bigger long spuds, so Charlotte and now Jazzy are my favourites.

They do look good and great to have a taste verdict, I must admit I was put off trying these by all the fancy blurb, but will now add them to my try list. if they taste anywhere near as good as Charlotte do they will be a winner, cheers
Are they an early or main cropper?

Jazzy are earlies, I only grow earlies these days to get them out of the ground before blight potentially hits and to use the ground again for winter crops.

I had a huge crop of large Harlequin this year Deb. A whole 25kg sack from 10 tubers. Very little damage. Have grown them before and wasn't too impressed but Al decided to give them a second chance.

I sometimes wonder if that is the way I should go, but I just love growing some of the different type maincrops and some from tps.
I grew Alouette this year an early maincrop, they taste very good and have reported good resistance to LB both leaves and tubers. They seem to have done well here while regular varieties are toast.

I think I may well follow your lead Deb & only grow earlies next year & harvest them early before blight comes.....so I will definitely try Jazzy after your taste test  :toothy10:
I had to dig up all of my Charlottes last week because blight had really struck our site badly & I could see signs of it on every one of my spud plants. I had been hoping to let the Charlottes grow on to a much bigger size. I got a great crop but have had to give most away as I don't fancy trying to store them as blight is so rampant on our site at the moment. I think I need to find out which earlies are the earliest  :tongue3: xjane

I grew maincrops for a few years but had the combined problems of late blight, and lacking somewhere to store sacks of harvested potatoes. Having lost more of my harvest to either blight, slugs if they stayed in the ground, or rot/ frost damage in storage, I came to the conclusion it was a bad idea for me!
So I stick to earlies/ 2nd earlies and try and be disciplined in cropping as soon as they are ready so they are perfect and get used straightaway, are have other crops ready to follow on.
