Get out and clap
« on: May 03, 2020, 17:09:24 »
You will all be clapping the Isle of Wight soon for saving the nation. We are going to trial the Corona app. Something on the phone will tell me to go and get tested as I have been close to somebody who had the virus but did not know at the time. I don't think I will be a lot of help as I don't intend to get near anybody as I treat everybody as a carrier anyway. If they lift the restrictions to see if it works it will not be the NHS we need, it will be undertakers.

Just watching the latest C_19 briefing..... "Where the Isle of Wight goes, the world follows"........Will we ever hear those words uttered again?!

They seem very proud of the app....I  do wonder how well it will work, when we last visited the IOS a few years ago our phones were red hot all the time as they constantly struggled to get a signal.....don't know if it's still the case?
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

The signal ain't that bad once  all the holiday makers go home, unless Fred over at Chale is pinching all the bandwidth watching his porn. Over the west wight it is still two cocoa tins and a bit of string or using etch a sketch for an ipad.

😂😂😂
I don’t think the concept would work for me on two counts, one I’m a midwife so if the app asks me if I’ve been near someone symptomatic it will pretty much always be yes and tell me to get swabbed or self isolate all the time which work will love I’m sure, and unlike most folk I don’t have my phone welded to my hand or take my phone with me everywhere I go and have it switched off deliberately when I’m at the lottie. It will be interesting to see how your gaffs experiment works.....especially the uptake.

Do we know what happens with the data other than the stated purpose?  This app is not made by a UK firm as far as I understand, nothing to do with the NHS despite the name, outsourced and privatised.

I also wonder how many false positives there are going to be and what constitutes 'having been in contact with'.  It only takes one droplet from a sneeze in a shop or from goods that were coughed over and we pick up an hour later.  Would it pick up those 'non contacts'?

In spite of my scepticism I will download it, nothing ventured nothing gained. Just remember if it works you will all owe me a pint.

[/quote]But it would work for all the people you have been in contact with in the early stages if you did  get it.

I’ve just seen a bod explaining what triggers the app, apparently it only considers ‘prolonged contact’ of 15 mins and over as a trigger to contact you to be tested.....? It will be interesting to see how it works Ace.

As they say they are only testing it here, I expect it will need tweeking later to 5 or 10 minutes. There are all the usual naysayers and conspiracy theorists mostly those doing a Ferguson who fear being tracked, but it looks as if it will have a good take up initially. The newspapers are trying to get comments of off of people but they just want to stir it up as usual.

I am not a phone person, so I will have to get used to carrying it around. Went to download the app and found my old phone will not run it,  plus the phone only runs for a few hours before it needs charging again. Looked for an upgrade and found it was 50p cheaper a month for a new one with all the bells and whistles. How I will get it up and running now there are no grandchildren to help me might be a mission. But I did get mine to connect to wifi this morning without swearing.

Interestingly  I was talking to an ICU consultant at the weekend and he said that basically the whole 2m thing is a bit of a stretch scientifically but, like "5 a day" an easy to remember figure and easy to carry out - an easy message to get out there.
At Kings the initial rule on exposure was to avoid being "15 mins within 2m of an infected person" - it was never don't get within 2m of anyone.
So the app does seem to be in keeping with that..
My issue with the app is that it is ignoring the whole international framework for contact tracing laid out by Apple/Google which is transparently laid out https://www.apple.com/covid19/contacttracing

The UK has decided to ignore that and start it's own separate scheme - as some other countries have..

https://www.wired.co.uk/article/nhs-covid-19-tracking-app-contact-tracing

Moved to Portugal - ain't going back!

I expect the UK app has the option of after it is finished with the data and stuff can be re-used for commercial gain by the builders of the app making it a cheaper option for the government to shell out for.  Privacy is a big argument over here, don't worry me, They already know what colour toilet paper we use.
