Thanks TeeGee.  Do you know what kind of soil they have in Sheffield?  Alkaline, neutral, acid?

I am not sure for certain but based on my soil which is around 20-25 miles away as the crow flies I would say in the main it is slightly acidic say pH 6.5.

Having said that, it is a teaching garden so I guess they adjust the pH in certain areas to conduct practical experiments.

Thanks Tee Gee.  It's just that all too often I get excited by plants only to find they won't do well in my deep, fertile but nonetheless alkaline soil.

The Evolution Garden

This area contains ancient plants such as Ferns, Ginkgo and Dawn Redwoods.

There are also a few samples of fossilised plant life.

There seems to be a lack of colour in some of the botanical gardens, especially noticeable in the Sheffield gardens.  I am surprised that there are so few flowers to be seen, yet judging from the leaves on the trees, it must be summertime in the photos.  Maybe they are trying to save money by having ground cover plants which are less labour intensive than flower beds.

Thanks for posting the jigsaws, Tee Gee.  I really enjoy doing them.

I really dislike formal bedding schemes - but they make good jigsaws.  Thanks Tee Gee

I totally agree with the above, Obelixx.  I too think that bedding schemes are so unnatural.

They do make good jig saws though and with all the assortment of colours, present more of a challenge.

I love the fountain in the new pictures, Tee Gee.  I have a similar one but a bit smaller than that shown at Sheffield and mine is three tier rather than four.  It was bought by my family for my 70th birthday.  My pond beneath it is not as big and is only about 6ft across but we made it deeper so we could have fish in it.
