standard gooseberries
« on: August 28, 2015, 15:17:41 »
well this year my two bush gooseberries were hugely laden, so much so that it was hard for me to cope with it all, single older widow. I saw some great standards on this site and decided to be ruthless and form standards from these two. All was going well and I was left with one small shoot at the top of each main stem

I was tired the other day and should never have walked around with secateurs in my hand, I cut the top shoots off, arghh, what was I thinking. They are great survivors and now there are shoots right at the base of each thick original stem and my mind is working overtime. I am going to leave just one new base shoot and will tie it to the thick stem on its way upwards. Now I am quite excited at that because I see me keeping the original thick stem clear of new shoots whilst growing a new stem up so will now have two anchors and more stability for my standards
