I've got mine still stuck in the soil - cut them off, left to dry then stuck them back in a few weeks later to mark where the emerging new shoots are so I don't put my plates of meat on top of them...

I use all long bits of woody prunings like this.

Short bits I poke or scatter on newly dug or sown soil to keep the cats off.
gone to pot :D
