Anyone know any Bird Resistant Sweetcorn varieties
« on: May 06, 2015, 12:56:39 »
Last year my sweetcorn was decimated by (presumably birds) eating it. I grew two varieties - Sungold which was very badly attacked and stripped and Extra Tender & Sweet which had only a little damage.
Apparently breeders now produce varieties which have a tight husk that is difficult for the birds to open up.
Anyone know any other bird resistant varieties?

Not had any problem from birds with Earlybird but the rats loved it.

Try putting plastic bottles over each cob.

Badgers have mine unless I net them off with debris netting to attempt to thwart them.

Well it could be rats , mice or squirrels but birds have been spotted eating the cobs on our site. Magpies, crows and blackbirds love them and we have lots of them as well as wood pigeons. They remove the top of the husks and work the way down eating the corn just as we would. Whatever it is eating them the husk on Extra Tender & Sweet is difficult for them to get at. Apparently birds taking sweetcorn is a big problem in the USA and they have bred sweetcorn that has tight husks that are difficult for them to remove. However the USA varieties probably won't do as well in our climate.

Its squirrel resistant varieties I need, must be a fortune to be made by somebody, tried covering the cobs with plastic bottles and anything that will fit but the little monsters still decimate them
