hello!
shallots?

I planted my shallots about a month ago - just before the snow. They have done absolutely nothing. I gave one a little tug and it didn't want to move, so I assume they've rooted. But where's the top growth? Am I being impatient as usual? When can I expect to see some green growing there?

I planted mine back in October. I thought they had failed until green appeared in Feb this year. They are now abut 6 inches tall and look fine.
I suspect they put out a root system first and then leaf follows. My elephant garlic started in pots seemed to take ages to show green but the roots were coming out of the bottom of the pot in about 10 days.

Reminds me of my brother-in-law a few years back. He tried his hand at gardening by planting a row of spuds. He said they didn't seem to be doing anything after 2 weeks....so he dug 'em up and ate them...!

Planted mine around Christmas, look ok to me, maybe planted them too close together. I find that shallots are the easiest veg to cultivate (touch wood), trouble free (?)

Hi all, pretty much the same for me as diver - just over half of my New years day crop planted have sprouted about 1cm above the ground... Mind you, I did have to re-plant them a few times as the local fox decided that particular bed would be a nice place to dig :-\

I plant about 6" in all directions. If you have a heck of a lot them aim to leave a bit more between rows so you can get in there to weed.

Nine inches, Kitty. Remember that each one gives you 9-20 bulbs? So they need a bit of room?

I start at 6" and pull every other one when useable. This gives pleeenty of room for the rest to grow and grow.

I planted mine about 6 weeks ago, and was getting worried. But the lovely weather we've had the last few days has brought them to live.
My Dad always said they should be planted on the shortest day and lighted on the longest.
Never quite done that yet thou.
