free online gardening seminars
« on: March 27, 2015, 10:53:27 »
A whole week of different speakers, some very well-known names among them.  Including topics like keeping chickens, growing own food organically and permaculture etc.

No doubt a lot of it will be with a USA background, but there are several topics of general interest too.

I might pass on 'How to eat and enjoy insects'   :BangHead:   :sunny:

This could be interesting Galina and I have signed up for it.

Regarding the lecture on eating insects, between us we may get some advice on how to prepare some Cabbage White butterfly sandwiches or olives stuffed with wasps.  We could bring a few dishes for people to try at our A4A meeting in July!    :icon_cheers:

My cousin accidentally ate a wasp once (in a jam sandwich).

She reports that they taste very very sour.

Did she get stung in the mouth? Eek

She did, right at the base of the tongue, just after she crunched through the wasp. She was very lucky the sting wasn't a little further back because that kind of swelling in the airway is very dangerous indeed.

I'm really not a big fan of wasps myself. I'm not worried about being stung, but I can't stand the idea of a wasp touching me. I find them completely repulsive. I like bees though.

This looks _really_ interesting.
Is there any way to watch this stuff for free ?
i.e.   http://homegrownfoodsummit.com/

For example has anyone liberated this material by
uploading it to a bit-torrent site, or better yet,
uploaded it to youtube or vimeo etc ?

yes.. i know i'm replying to an ancient thread that's
over a year since the last previous post... but someone
might still notice and reply  :-)

There might be another one next year.  Alternatively you can learn quite a lot by going on the speakers websites and getting their newsletters.

As I said at the time, I would give them a miss and surprisingly (!) haven't felt the need since then either  :tongue3:  :BangHead:

Well Playground and others of course, would you credit it!  Just now an email arrived with details on how to register for the next one in a month.  Happy watching

(hope that rather cumbersome link works, if not I will make it into a tinyurl)

Food for thought, Galina ;-)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJlO0aifJxA

After watching this... i think i could do it.
I sincerely doubt i could eat these things raw, or alive.
But after some cooking and preparation... removal of
heads and legs, etc ... yeah, i think i could... especially
if i had spent some time being hungry.

Yes I am sure we all could, a lot of this disgust is just cultural.  I heard recently in a programme about eating insects that maggots were described as 'land shrimps'.   Sounds much tastier ...........  if you're hungry perhaps .............. :drunken_smilie:

A parallel might be eating horse meat:  in France absolutely normal, in Britain - no way!
