purple sprouting broccoli
« on: October 12, 2014, 20:43:01 »
Is it too late to sow purple sprouting broccoli. I was thinking of maybe growing it in the greenhouse over winter and harvesting in the spring.

I tried growing it through the summer but it kept going to seed.

I don't think there is enough sunlight now to grow PS broccoli from seed. I have had some success sowing things late and growing on in the greenhouse but with much smaller plants like rocket, radicchio and lettuce. I'd be interested to hear if it works.

Purple sprouting are normally quite large plants by now.  But it is always fun to experiment.  Personally I would try Russian Kale, it makes good flower heads for eating, nice tasty leaves and is very hardy, tends to grow faster.
