There are many varieties of damson and some will suit your local climate better than others.

A query on the RHS Plant Finder produced this list - https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/Search-Results?query=Damson with suppliers.

There is also a damson day in Cumbria - http://www.golakes.co.uk/do/food-and-drink/article-damson-day.aspx where you could talk to people about the best varieties.   There is also a damson association mentioned in the blurb where you could probably get advice.
