Carrot Jam. Delicious!
« on: March 25, 2014, 09:42:51 »
Hi All, I wondered if you would like my recipe for Carrot Jam?  I tried it last year and it was delicious and not like you would expect it to taste.  I've done a youtube video with my recipe, so please enjoy.

I've seen carrot jam for sale in my local "world foods" shop and it intrigued me, but I ended up buying the rose petal jam instead which was gorgeous.

Thanks for the recipe, I'll definitely have to try that!

This is interesting. I make chilli jam and eat it with savouries, I'm assuming carrot jam is eaten the same way? Or can you eat it with sweet things like  carrot cake etc?

Carrot Jam is versatile and can be eaten as a sweet jam or as a sort of chutney with cold meats.  You just have to try it to believe it . Thanks for the replies everyone xxx  :toothy10:

Sounds intriguing! But what does it taste like - could you supply some tasting notes?

I've tried some 10 year-old carrot wine which tasted sweet and earthy - anything like?

Ok, an answer to some questions.  Carrot jam tastes more like a marmalade.  It doesn't taste of carrots.  I also make a recipe that I put lemons into it as well.  That makes it sharper and less sweet.

Carrot Jam was developed originally by the Victorians.  It was a Christmas recipe.  By December, all the soft fruits would have been finished but they found that they could make jam from grated carrots.  Then, during the second world war, it was revived when sweets and fruits were in short supply.

Hope this helps
Love Maria xxx

Well carrots work in cake! I'm totally sold.

You know they used to put tiny bits of wood in cheap jam to convince buyers it was expensive raspberry with seeds in.

My godmother was a factory inspector, and she told us it was grass seed she had to look out for in cheap jam......

Yes I have just read the history of the humble carrot on the carrot museum website,,,,,,,

Made for interesting reading,on our visits to Dartmoor in devon Jude and I used to buy a carrot chilli jam that was without question the most moreish thing with strong cheese and crusty bread I ever munched on.
