Caterpillars
« on: August 02, 2013, 08:05:22 »
I haven’t seen as many butterflies this year as last, but growing a nettle wild patch seems to be helping.
Took pictures yesterday of this lot munching away, I think mostly Small Tortoiseshell, possibly some Peacocks?

Great to see these shots, we have quite a few overgrown corners on our site that have beds of nettles, so we don't need to have them on the actual plots. I shall have a careful look around today to see if I can find some caterpillars.
Regarding Butterfly numbers, this year there have been loads more than last year in our area. Tortoiseshells and Peacocks in particular are up in numbers.
The whites have gone mad, at one point I could see 30-40 on the wing.
Kind regards

Mike.
