Yellow leaves dwarf French beans
« on: May 29, 2013, 13:38:55 »
Have grown some French beans from seed in the greenhouse, nice green leaves
Since planting out the leaves have turned yellow
I have added grow more to the soil before planting
Any ideas

At least you have leaves, mine haven't even come up.  Think it was too cold for them.

I'd go with the too cold bit as well, especially if they were looking nice and healthy before planting out.  Could be they weren't hardened off enough before planting out. Perhaps a little fleece to keep it a bit warmer and not so draughty might help until it warms up a bit? I've planted some dwarf beans in a poly-tunnel and they are a bit sulky and slow growing, so can imagine they would be unhappy outside.

It is labour intensive, but effective - i am starting to plant out French Beans now, but they are all under individual bottle cloches.  The beans grow fast with the extra protection.  French Beans like a little pampering.

In case of rare climbing beans where I have few seeds only I leave those bottles on all season to make it more difficult for our mice/voles to bite through the stems.  The tops of the beans just grow out of the tops of the bottles and carry on growing as normal.  Unfortunately I run out of bottles quite fast every year and can't protect them all.
