went to the lottie this afternoon
« on: December 06, 2003, 16:38:39 »
I just got back from the lottie, it was a hard peddle into that cold wind, side bags filled with endive and greenloof.

Rabbits gave the leeks a haircut.

Aqua dulce broad beans.

Greenloof.

3.Most munchable!

4. Best I could do today - Little Gem - showing an annoying 'browning' that I get at this time of year. - Tim

Wish my rabbits were so selective Tim. I have to `haircut` my leeks by hand while the rabbits enjoy the carrots.

Hi Hugh,
I doubt our rabbits are selective, the carrots went in the anti-rabbit enclosure. I had put half the leeks inside the fencing and half outside, guess of which one the picture was taken. (btw. those were my leeks, not Tim's haha)

Some other allotmenteers came over to talk and they were lamenting over the fact that the rabbits are now chewing holes in expesive netting to get to their kale and leeks. So far the rabbit fencing (with the bottom turned outwards under the soil) works like a charm, knock on wood.

Wel Tim, I still wouldn't turn my nose up at those little gems. The fristina in the greenhouse are still too small to harvest, I don't think they're going to make it before the real frost.

- while we're on leeks, you do plant them with their leaves in line, don't you? - to make hoeing easier? - Tim

wow Tim, what magic, while I was looking, this fantastic calabas appeared. Didn't loose all your pictures then? Or was this a new one? What an amazing sight that is.

Huh? About those leeks being planted with their leaves in-line, you are joking aren't you? I bet if you hang laundry out to dry, you also put them in sequence from big to small and sort by sort?

Thinking about your leeks Tim, I remember seeing a picture of them. I understand now why you put them in with their leaves growing in the direction of the row.

As big as you grow your leeks, if you let them grow sideways, one would need a manchete to get in there for weeding. They would cover the veggie row on either side. I bet that when it's raining, you don't need an umbrella, you just stand under the leek leaves.

- no, we lost about the lot - these 2 were taken last night - special for you!

Actually, Ina, the leaf business is most important when they are young and need hoeing constantly, when the leaves are close to the ground.

Ohhhhhhh Tim, I am so sorry about all the stuff you lost. Sounds like your pc is still a bit wobbly.

Thanks for the pictures. We just bought a new digital camera, (not as fancy as Beerbelly's tho') so next pictures should be better. The camera we have used so far is an el cheapo little thing the size of one of those highlighter marking pens. Still, amazing pictures from such a little toy thing we got free for subscribing to a magazine.
