Where do you buy your Seed Potatoes
« on: January 08, 2013, 17:58:45 »
Hello, I usually buy my Potatoes from Alan Roman, but it looks like he has been bought out by Thompson and Morgan who I don't really want to deal with.

Can anyone recommend where to buy from?

Thank you,

Martin.

Brookside nursery - Ansty in Leicester they  have a huge  selection and you buy by the spud ,so one of each variety if you fancy, also peas and beans by weight so a great deal cheaper than any packet.
They appear to be family run ,always helpful.

If I didn't buy local then JBA would be for me, I never knew about Alan Romans, I had to go and check for myself.    :drunken_smilie:

I'm waiting for a reply from JBA, too. Our allotment is putting together an order and  we want to know if there are any shortages

I have ordered from D L Brown.   Firstly because they have the seed potatoes I want and secondly they are delivering in January.  This gives me time to buy elsewhere if by anychance they are unable to deliver my complete order.

How much are they per kg?

I normally get mine from a nursery called 'Hawgrips' in Enderby, Leicester.  They have just arrived and are £2.25 per kg and you pick the amount you want as well, rather than buying a bag.  I noticed they are also in Wilkinsons too now.

I used to get mine from T&M (never again) and Garden Organic at their potato days, but for the last 2 years have bought Wilkinson's finest and have had reallly good results.
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

I buy mine from our local lottie shop.  Loads of choice at good prices, cheap as chips.  Kings seeds have loads to choose from.  Is there a local lottie shop near by where you could go.  Most will sell to you without having to have one of their allotments.

Our local lottie shop sells in small quantities...one potato, 2 potato, 3 potato 4....  :kermit: trouble is I would need to be a member...at £5 a year.

I think it depends on what varieties you are seeking- some are easy to buy some not and so you may have to pay P&P and buy online.
Harlequin is my fave but hard to buy except from T&M.
Vitelotte and annabelle my favourite 1st early are scarce too.
Bought some brilliantly cropping  charlottes from poundland a few years ago - I don't personally think the supplier difference is risky.

Went there today and got 10kg. Will get the more rarer ones from Ryton in a fortnight.

We ordered Kestrel and Foremost from Moles Seeds and at this late stage they tell us they have none.

Last year they failed to deliver on Int Kidney.

Never again,
What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?
