Has anyone grown white tomatoes.  If so what do they taste like.  Thinking about growing a white currant variety (sorry I have been looking at too much tomato porn.

Usually sweet and mild.  No flavour explosions but pleasant enough.  One of the big advantages of white tomatoes is that people with arthritis can have them without the side effects of red tomatoes.  I have read this and don't know this from personal experience, but thought I'd mention it.

I have been growing Basinga, but they are too sweet for my taste, Potato Leaf White, which is early and has quite a bit of flavour, Ivory Egg, which tastes fine and looks stunning and a white cherry tomato from HSL, which does ok but not my favourite.  Also beefsteak tomato Mrs Lindsey from HSL, which is a late greenhouse tomato, but often weighs around a pound per fruit or bigger.  They are also tasty, but not many fruits per plant.

I agree about Potato Leaf White... it goes a bit yellow on full ripening.. perhaps I have a bit of cross pollination in my stock.

Don't think so - white tomatoes are really very pale yellow tomatoes, cream colour to pale yellow and often with a tiny bit of red too.  Although I have been told never to save seed from any fruit that shows  red.  Perhaps save seeds from the whitest fruits only.

Thaks for your replies.  Will give a bash at them - but which one?  Oh decisions, decisions.

I find white toms tend to be a little on the mild side for me but can thoroughly recommend Coyote cherry.  I grew it this year and found it deliciously sweet and fruity, one I'll definitely grow again. I'm going to try Ivory Pear and and Big White Pink Stripe next year, or that's the plan at the moment!

Was thinking of Coyote cherry as well but can't decide whether I want that or Little White Rabbit, a currant variety.  Definitely into currant toms this year.  Both are stocked by Amishland seeds.  Have you ever tried this company?

No, I've not tried them so can't speak from experience, but from what I gather they don't have a good reputation and it's one to avoid. I think Jeannine posted about them.
I can share Coyote with you, but the fruit is bigger than  currants.

Blimey you've got a good memory.  Thanks for that, and the reminder of seed shopping sites.

I grew White Wonder this year. I agree with other folk, not much flavour, and a cream/pale yellow colour rather than pure white. This is a big tomato though, more of a beefsteak variety.

A really tasty one I think is good is Blonde Boar, great flavour and a fair production, very pretty with its stripes too.

I grew White Oxheart this year.  It was a nice plumptious tomato good for sauces but a mild taste with not a lot of juice/seeds in the middle.  Not sure I would grow it again.  Hubby is not to keen on things that aren't the right colour <<<<rolls eyes>>>>  anyhoo I did however grow sweet pea currant tomatoes this year and wouldn't really bother with currant toms again.  Just toooooo weeny to be too much more than a novelty!
Remember it will all be okay in the end, if its not okay, its not the end.

Loving the sound of 'plumptious'  tomatoes :glasses12:

Must admit I find currant toms a bit fiddly to pick, but would be great for kids eating them straight from the vine  :toothy12:
